A Domed Glass Sconce With Its Own Reading Light
The Schwung Odyssey Libris Wall Sconce takes the dome topped glass cylinder of the Odyssey collection and mounts it on a tall, rounded brass backplate alongside a small pivoting reading light. The glass gives a calm, downward glow; the brass cylinder beneath it gives a tight beam for a book or a worktop. At 305mm tall and 105mm wide it is a neat, self contained fitting for a bedside, a reading corner or a hallway console.
Choose Your Glass and Finish
Three glass types and three metal finishes are available.
- Opal Matte Glass: triplex opal glass, acid etched on the outside, giving a fully diffused, even glow with no visible bulb
- Marble Matte Glass: a milky glass with soft internal veining that shows as a cloudy pattern when lit
- Dries Ribbon Glass: clear borosilicate glass with fine vertical ribs that scatter light into a pattern on the wall
- Lacquered Burnished Brass, a warm aged brass under lacquer, as photographed
- Black Gunmetal, a deep charcoal black
- Polished Nickel, a bright, cool mirror finish
Finishes are applied by hand and vary from piece to piece, and marble glass varies from shade to shade because its veining forms during blowing. Colours on screen are a guide only.
How It Works
Shade Above, Spot Below
The glass shade is 100mm across and 150mm tall and holds a 4W E14 LED G45 bulb, supplied. Below it a 20mm brass cylinder carries a 3W G9 LED, also supplied, and tilts through up to 90 degrees and rotates through up to 135 degrees. Together the two give around 440 lumens at a warm 2200K to 3000K.
Fixing and Dimming
The fitting fixes through its 105mm wide pill shaped backplate, 7mm thick, with two visible brass screws, and projects around 142mm from the wall. Dimming is with electronic dimmers only, ELV or trailing edge.
We recommend that this fitting is installed by a qualified electrician.
Where It Works Best
Schwung shows the Odyssey Libris beside a reading chair and above a hallway console, and both make sense. Beside a bed it does the work of a table lamp and a reading light together. In a hallway or landing the diffused shade gives a soft night time glow while the spot can be aimed at a mirror, a picture or the console top. It also suits hotel rooms and studies where a single wall point has to provide two types of light.
Made By Schwung
Schwung was founded by Rudi Nijssen, a former antiques dealer, and Dominique Sente, a former goldsmith, and makes its lighting in solid brass and mouth blown glass in its own workshop in Poland. The Odyssey collection is built around this dome topped cylinder shade, which appears across Schwung's pendants, table lamps and chandeliers, so the Libris will sit comfortably with other Odyssey pieces in the same room.

Questions People Ask
How does the Odyssey Libris differ from the other Odyssey wall sconces?
It uses the same 100mm by 150mm dome topped shade but adds a pivoting reading light below it on a taller 305mm backplate. The standard Odyssey sconces have the shade only.
Which glass should I choose?
Opal Matte gives the softest, most even light and hides the bulb. Marble Matte adds a veined pattern to the glow. Dries Ribbon is clear and ribbed, so the bulb shows and the ribs throw patterned light onto the wall.
Can I aim the reading light?
Yes. The small cylinder tilts through up to 90 degrees and rotates through up to 135 degrees.
Are the bulbs supplied?
Yes. A 4W E14 LED globe bulb and a 3W G9 LED are included, and both are standard replaceable lamps.
What dimmer does it need?
An electronic ELV or trailing edge dimmer. Schwung states that other dimmer types should not be used.
Should an electrician install it?
Yes. We recommend that this mains voltage fitting is installed by a qualified electrician.
