A Single Globe With Its Own Kind of Light

The Dries Single Pendant is built around one glass globe hung from a slender brass drop, the simplest possible shape in the Glass Globe family. What sets it apart from its opal and transparent siblings is the glass itself: Dries Ribbon, a surface of fine drawn threads that catches and scatters light rather than letting it pass straight through. Available across four sizes and three brass finishes, it works equally well as a single fitting over a small table or repeated in a cluster where each globe catches the light slightly differently.

In Dries Ribbon Glass

According to Schwung, each globe is mouth blown and then worked by hand while still hot, with fine threads of glass drawn across the surface to create the ribbon texture. The result is a globe that never reads as flat, from some angles the threads sit almost invisibly within the glass, from others they throw fine, intricate shadows across the inside of the globe and onto anything nearby. It is the most textured and least uniform of Schwung's three glass types, opal and transparent both give a more even, predictable glow, and no two Dries globes catch the light in quite the same way.

Choose Your Finish

The brass drop and ceiling rose come in Black Gunmetal, Lacquered Burnished Brass or Polished Nickel. Black Gunmetal recedes and lets the texture of the glass do the work, Lacquered Burnished Brass adds warmth that plays well against the ribbon pattern, and Polished Nickel gives the coolest, most reflective frame of the three, a contrast against the warm tone of the glass.

How It Works

Each Dries Single Pendant takes one G9 LED bulb, 4W and around 250 lumens at 2700K warm white, included. It is dimmable, but only with an electronic dimmer switch, ELV or trailing edge, not a standard leading edge dimmer, and is rated IP20 for dry indoor rooms only. The drop is adjustable, with roughly 3 metres of cable to shorten on installation. The 150mm globe runs from around 280mm up to 3290mm, 200mm from 360mm to 3360mm, 250mm from 430mm to 3430mm, and 300mm from 520mm to 3520mm. Weight increases with size, from around 1.4kg for the 150mm globe up to 2.3kg for the 300mm.

Where It Works Best

A single Dries pendant works well wherever there is room to look at the glass up close, over a bedside table, in a small dining nook, or at the foot of a staircase. Hung in multiples at staggered heights over a kitchen island or a longer dining table, the fitting comes into its own, since every globe is subtly different and the repetition makes that variation more visible rather than less.

Made by Schwung

Schwung was founded in 2014 in Namyslow, Poland, by Belgian designer Dominique Sente and Dutch designer Rudi Nijssen. According to Schwung, every fitting leaving its Namyslow workshop is made to order in solid brass and mouth blown glass, and the Dries Ribbon finish is one of the more labour intensive to produce, since the ribbon texture has to be drawn onto each globe by hand before it cools.
