Silver Light Through Sheer Organza

The Whitney semi flush light wraps a ring of downward curving arms and faceted crystal balls inside a drum shade made from sheer white organza, so the fixture glows softly through the fabric while the crystal catches whatever light passes through it. It reads as understated rather than showy from most angles, then throws a scatter of tiny reflections across the ceiling once switched on.

Imperial Silver Metal, Grey Trimmed Shade

The metalwork on this piece is finished in Imperial Silver, a bright, polished silver tone that shows clearly on the curved arms and the ceiling plate. The organza shade itself is white, banded top and bottom in a darker grey trim that gives the drum a cleaner edge than plain white alone would. Several faceted crystal balls hang beneath the arms and the centre stem, catching light from the concealed bulbs behind the fabric.

How It Works

This fitting takes three E14 bulbs, not supplied, and is dimmable if you fit dimmable bulbs, though it has no dimmer built in. It is Class I, so it needs an earthed supply, and as a ceiling fitting it should be installed by a qualified electrician. The shade sits 15.2cm deep and 40.7cm across, mounted on a semi flush stem with a minimum drop of 40.9cm from the ceiling.

Quoizel, The Company Behind It

Quoizel started out in Manhattan in 1930 as a small lamp company founded by Michael Chaikin, and its earliest products were hurricane lamps that burned oil rather than electricity. As homes were wired for mains power the company moved into hardwired fittings, chandeliers, pendants, sconces and ceiling lights like the Whitney, carrying the same attention to detail from the metalwork through to fittings that use crystal and fabric rather than the stained glass the company is also known for.

Can this hang lower as a pendant? Yes. It comes with two 30.5cm rods that extend the drop from a minimum of 40.9cm up to a maximum of 143.3cm, so you can fit it as a semi flush or a pendant depending on your ceiling height.

What bulbs does it need? Three E14 bulbs, not supplied. Fit dimmable bulbs if you want to dim it, since the fitting has no dimmer of its own.
