The Compact Wakefield

This is the smallest lantern in the Wakefield range, a single light fitting that keeps the same stepped roof cap and boxy seeded glass frame as its larger siblings but scales it down for a narrower doorway or a side entrance.

The Earth Black Finish

Finished in matte Earth Black, the composite frame has no gloss and shows the same frame within a frame detail as the rest of the range, an inner glass surround set back from the outer black uprights. The glass is clear and seeded, giving it a light texture rather than sitting perfectly flat and smooth.

How It Works

It takes one E27 bulb, not supplied. It carries an IP44 rating and is made from a weather resistant composite built to cope with rain and coastal conditions. It is dimmable when fitted with dimmable bulbs, and as a Class I fitting it needs an earth connection, so have it wired in by a qualified electrician.

Where It Works Best

At 28cm tall and 17.1cm wide, this is the most compact of the three Wakefield wall lanterns, smaller than the medium single light version at 35.7cm and considerably smaller than the large three light lantern at 43.3cm. It suits a narrow porch, a side door, or anywhere the bigger lanterns in the range would look out of proportion.

From Oil Lamps To Wired Light

Quoizel began in 1930 making oil burning hurricane lamps in Manhattan, long before it built hardwired fittings like this one. As American homes electrified through the twentieth century, the company moved with them, from portable oil lamps into chandeliers, pendants, sconces and outdoor lanterns, a shift that eventually led to ranges like the Wakefield.

Is this too small for a main front door? It depends on scale, it suits a narrower doorway or a side entrance well, if you want more presence on a wide front door the medium or large Wakefield lanterns carry more visual weight.

Does it handle rain well? Yes, it is IP44 rated and made from a weather resistant composite, designed for exposed outdoor spots rather than a fully sheltered position.
