The Old Black Finish

Old Black is not a flat, uniform paint. Look closely at the steel and you will see a mottled, almost weathered texture, patches of charcoal grey mixed through the black rather than a single even tone. It reads as ironwork that has been handled and hammered rather than sprayed, which suits the angular cage design well. There is no second finish option on this listing, so what you see in the photographs is exactly what arrives.

How It Works

Two E14 candle bulbs sit forward of the backplate, held by the diamond shaped steel cage that projects from the rectangular wall plate. Bulbs are not supplied. The fitting is dimmable, but only if you fit dimmable bulbs and pair it with a compatible dimmer switch, a plain bulb on a dimmer circuit will not dim smoothly. It is Class I, which means it needs an earth connection, and it should be installed by a qualified electrician.

Where It Works Best

This is the two light wall version of the Vanguard family, sized for a single wall run rather than a ceiling. At 30.5cm tall and 18cm wide it suits a kitchen wall beside cabinetry, either side of a dining room mirror, or as a flanking pair either side of a doorway. If you need a ceiling fitting instead, the same faceted cage design continues in the Vanguard pendant range, which comes with three or four lights and considerably more drop for a table or island.

The 1930 Manhattan Beginning

Quoizel started life in 1930 in Manhattan, founded by Michael Chaikin as a small lamp company. Its very first products were not electric at all, hurricane lamps that burned oil, sold at a time when plenty of American homes were still adjusting to electric light. That early oil lit range is a strange starting point for a company now known for pieces like this one, all hard angles and modern steel, but it is where the name began.

Is this the same design as the Vanguard pendant? Yes, it shares the same faceted steel cage and Old Black finish as the Vanguard pendants, just built for wall mounting with two lights rather than hanging from the ceiling with three or four.

What bulbs does it take? Two E14 candle bulbs, which are not included, so pick these up separately before fitting.
