Every panel in this shade is cut and leaded by hand, so the geometry never quite repeats itself once you look closely. Straight bands of amber, honey and soft green run outward from the centre in a pattern that owes a clear debt to Prairie School design, the kind of stained glass window you would expect on a Chicago bungalow rather than a table lamp. It throws a warm, mellow light rather than a bright one, which is exactly the point.

The Vintage Bronze Finish

The base underneath all that glass is cast metal in a Vintage Bronze finish, deliberately understated so the shade does the talking. In the photographs you can see it has a soft, worn looking patina rather than a polished shine, with a squared off column and a stepped foot that echoes the geometric lines above it. Two brass coloured pull chains hang from the fitting, one for each bulb, so you can run the lamp at half or full output depending on which chain you pull.

How It Works

This is a plug in table lamp, so there is no hardwired installation to arrange. It takes two E27 bulbs, which are not supplied, and each is controlled by its own pull chain switch on the fitting itself. Fit dimmable E27 bulbs and the lamp will dim, since the fitting itself has no built in dimming module, it simply depends on what you put in it. It is wired to Class I, which means the fitting must be properly earthed.

Where It Works Best

At 58cm tall and 41cm across the shade, this is a proper reading lamp scale rather than a small accent piece, so it wants a console table, a wide sideboard or a substantial nightstand rather than a narrow shelf. Because it runs two bulbs independently, it is useful where you want a low glow some evenings and a brighter working light on others, such as beside an armchair used for reading. What bulbs does it take? Two E27 bulbs, which are not included. Choose dimmable bulbs if you want the lamp to dim, since the dimming depends on the bulb rather than the fitting.

Do both pull chains do the same thing? No, each chain switches one of the two bulbs on its own, so you can run the lamp on one bulb for a soft glow or both for more light.
