One Compact Lantern for a Tight Spot

The single Riggs keeps the ribbed glass and capped brass top of the larger versions but wraps them in a neater, more rounded housing rather than the squared off cage frame you see on the 2 and 3 light fittings. It is the one to pick when you need a single point of light rather than a run of lanterns.

The Finish

Weathered Brass is the only finish, and on this single fitting it photographs a touch warmer and more coppery than on its larger siblings, likely just the lighting in the shots rather than a different metal. The glass cylinder is ribbed the same way as the rest of the range, and the unlit photo shows the housing clearly, a rounded drum shape rather than a square cage, holding the glass top and bottom.

How It Works

This single fitting runs on one E14 LED bulb, a smaller base than the E27 bulbs used in the 2 and 3 light Riggs versions, and the bulb is not supplied. It dims only if you fit a dimmable E14 bulb, paired with a suitable dimmer. Class I rated, it needs an earth connection, and being hardwired it should be fitted by a qualified electrician.

Where It Works Best

IP44 rated, this suits the splash zone beside or above a bathroom mirror, and our bathroom lighting zones guide sets out what each zone allows. At 14cm wide it works best in pairs, one on either side of a mirror, rather than alone, and if you need one wide fitting over a whole mirror the 2 light Riggs at 38.1cm or the 3 light at 56cm would suit better.

Quoizel started out in 1930 making hurricane lamps that burned oil, not electricity, and only moved into hardwired chandeliers, pendants, sconces and wall fittings as homes themselves became wired for power. Should I buy a pair? Most people do, one either side of a mirror, since at 14cm wide a single fitting gives one sided light rather than an even spread.

Is it suitable for a bathroom? Yes, it is IP44 rated for the splash zone around a mirror or basin, not for use inside a shower enclosure.
