Two Little Lanterns With an Industrial Edge

Riggs borrows the shape of an old ship's lantern, a caged glass cylinder sat under a capped top, and mounts two of them either side of a round weathered brass backplate. The clear ribbed glass leaves the bulb on show rather than hiding it, which gives the fitting a lit up, workshop kind of character rather than a soft bathroom glow.

The Finish

Weathered Brass is the only finish this comes in, an aged, slightly matte brass tone rather than a bright polished one, and it is what gives Riggs its industrial look. The glass is clear and ribbed vertically rather than smooth, which softens the bulb just enough to stop it looking like a bare filament while still leaving it visible. In the lifestyle photo above a double vanity you can see how warm the brass reads against a pale wall, closer to old hardware than new metal.

How It Works

Two E27 LED bulbs run this fitting and neither is supplied, so factor that into your order. It dims if dimmable E27 bulbs are fitted, but not otherwise. This is a Class I fitting, meaning it needs an earth connection, and because it is hardwired it should go up through a qualified electrician rather than as a plug in job.

Where It Works Best

This 2 light version is 38.1cm wide, a good match for a single mirror as shown in the photo, while the 3 light Riggs at 56cm suits a wider double vanity and the single light at 14cm works better fitted in pairs either side of a narrower mirror.

From New York Loft to Charleston Workshop

Quoizel moved its headquarters, manufacturing and distribution out of New York in 1996, into a 305,000 square foot facility near Charleston, South Carolina, where the company still designs and builds today. That low country setting has fed into the design studio ever since, and a fitting like Riggs, with its exposed bulb and caged glass, owes as much to that workshop attitude as to any particular period style.
