Exposed Bulb, Held By Two Brass Hoops

The Penn Station does away with a solid drum entirely. A wide clear glass bowl sits upside down, gripped at the rim by a pair of curved brushed brass arms and locked in place with a pair of knurled thumbscrews, so the bulb inside sits in plain view rather than hidden behind frosted or coloured glass.

A Warm Brushed Finish, Not A Mirror Shine

The metalwork is finished in Brushed Brass, a soft satin gold rather than a polished, reflective one, so the ceiling plate, the curved arms and the thumbscrews all share the same low glare surface. The glass bowl itself is clear rather than tinted or seeded, which is why the bulb inside reads so clearly from below.

How It Works

It takes a single E27 bulb, not supplied, so you can choose your own shape and warmth, including a filament style bulb if you want the look shown in the photographs. It is dimmable if you fit a dimmable bulb. This is a Class I fitting, which means it needs an earth connection, and because it is a hardwired ceiling fitting we would recommend having it installed by a qualified electrician.

Where It Works Best

At 26.7cm tall with a 33cm diameter, the Penn Station sits close to the ceiling, which makes it a good choice for a kitchen, hallway or dining room with a lower ceiling height where a pendant would hang too low. Because the glass is fully open at the bottom, expect a good spread of direct light rather than the softer wash you would get from a frosted or fabric shade.

From A Manhattan Lamp Maker To A Carolina Coast Factory

Quoizel spent its first decades as a New York company, starting out in 1930 as a small Manhattan lamp maker under Michael Chaikin. In 1996 the whole operation, headquarters, manufacturing and distribution, moved south to a 305,000 square foot facility near Charleston, South Carolina, where it still sits today. The company says the Charleston area and its lowcountry surroundings continue to feed ideas back into its design studio, a long way from the fitting's original Manhattan roots.
