This is the pedestal version of Quoizel's Newbury lantern, built to sit on top of a gate pier, a low wall or a dedicated post rather than to hang or mount flat. A tapered brass finial tops a hexagonal lantern of bevelled glass, all raised on a round brass base plate that is made to fix straight onto a pier cap.

About The Polished Brass Finish

This pedestal comes in polished brass, a bright, reflective finish rather than one that weathers or darkens outdoors. It suits gate piers and boundary walls already finished in stone or render, and pairs naturally with the matching wall and chain lanterns in the same Newbury range if you are lighting more than one point around an entrance.

How It Works

Two E14 candle bulbs sit inside the lantern and are not supplied, so plan on fitting your own, ideally dimmable LEDs. The fitting is Class I, meaning it needs a proper earth connection, and because it is a fixed, hardwired fitting it should be installed and connected by a qualified electrician rather than as a DIY job. It will dim correctly provided the bulbs fitted are themselves dimmable.

At 57cm tall and 26.4cm wide, this is the tallest single piece in the Newbury range covered here, built specifically to crown a pier or post rather than mount flat to a wall or hang from a ceiling. Its IP44 rating means it is built to handle open weather, rain and wind included, so it suits an exposed gateway or driveway entrance rather than needing any shelter overhead.

From Oil Lamps To Electric Light

Quoizel began in 1930 making oil burning hurricane lamps, not electric fittings, in a small Manhattan workshop under Michael Chaikin. As homes electrified over the following decades the company moved with them, from portable oil lamps into wired chandeliers, pendants, sconces and outdoor fittings like this pedestal lantern. The cast detailing and lantern shape here still carry a visible debt to that earlier style of lamp making, from years before anything was wired for electricity.

Questions People Ask

How is this different from the wall lantern in the same range? This one sits on a round base plate designed for the top of a pier or post, rather than mounting flat with a scroll arm like the wall lantern does. The lantern head itself is a similar shape and finish.

Does it come with bulbs? No. It takes two E14 candle bulbs, and dimmable LEDs are worth fitting if you want to use it with a dimmer switch.

Can this be fitted to any pier or post? It fixes via its base plate, so the pier or post needs a flat top of a suitable size and a qualified electrician to run the wiring to it.
