Classic Brass Lantern For A Period Door
This is the polished brass version of Quoizel's large Newbury wall lantern, a hexagonal fitting in solid cast brass with bevelled glass panels on every side and a scrolled arm carrying it clear of the wall. The brass is polished bright rather than left to weather, so it reads as a crisp, formal finish from the first day it goes up.
Choosing Polished Brass
Polished brass is the brighter and more reflective option in this range, throwing back more light from the two candle bulbs inside than the aged copper alternative does. It suits a painted door in a pale colour, existing brass door furniture, or a more formal facade generally. If you prefer a finish that settles and darkens outdoors over time, the aged copper version of this same lantern uses the identical body and glass.
How It Works
Two E14 candle bulbs sit inside the bevelled glass and are not included, so you will need a pair of your own, ideally dimmable LEDs. Wiring is Class I, so a proper earth connection is required, and as a fixed wall mounted fitting it should be installed by a qualified electrician rather than fitted as a DIY job. Fit dimmable bulbs and it will work fine on a dimmer switch.
Where It Works Best
Standing 53.1cm tall and 26.4cm wide, and projecting 25.4cm out from the wall, this is the larger of the two Newbury wall lanterns and works well either side of a substantial front door or either side of a garage. At 3kg it is the lightest of the Newbury pieces in this batch, a function of the plating rather than the size, which stays identical to the aged copper version. Its IP44 rating means it is built for an open wall facing the weather, not just a sheltered porch.
The Abigail Adams Lamp And Quoizel's Long Memory
Quoizel's very first products in 1930 were oil burning hurricane lamps rather than anything electric, made by Michael Chaikin's small Manhattan company. One of those early designs, the Abigail Adams lamp, stayed in the catalogue for decades after the switch to electric light, which says something about how slowly this company changes a shape it knows works. This wall lantern belongs to that same tradition of classic forms kept in production rather than redesigned each season.

Questions People Ask
How does this compare to the aged copper version? Same lantern and the same size, the only difference is the finish. This one is a bright polished brass, the aged copper version is a darker finish that weathers outdoors.
Does it come with bulbs? No. It takes two E14 candle bulbs, and dimmable LEDs are worth choosing if you plan to run it on a dimmer.
Will this cope with an exposed wall? Yes, its IP44 rating covers wind driven rain and splashing from any angle, so it suits an open facade as well as a covered one.
