A Wall Lantern Built To Weather Beautifully

This is the large wall mounted lantern from Quoizel's Newbury range, cast in solid brass and finished in aged copper, a deep oxidised brown that already looks settled rather than fresh from the box. A scrolled brass arm carries it out from the wall, and bevelled glass panels wrap the hexagonal body so the two candle bulbs inside throw a faceted, warm light rather than a flat glow.

About The Aged Copper Finish

Aged copper is the darker and more textured of the two finishes this lantern comes in, closer to a weathered bronze than a bright metal. Being an outdoor finish it will keep changing gently over the years rather than staying static, which suits a period porch, a stone doorway or reclaimed brickwork better than a mirror bright finish would. The polished brass version of this same lantern gives you the identical shape in a brighter, more reflective tone if that suits your door better.

How It Works

Two E14 candle bulbs fit inside the glass and are not supplied, so choose your own, ideally dimmable LEDs to keep them efficient. The fitting is Class I, meaning it needs a proper earth connection, and because it is a fixed wall mounted light it should be installed by a qualified electrician. It will dim happily as long as the bulbs fitted are themselves dimmable.

At 53.1cm tall, 26.4cm wide and projecting 25.4cm from the wall, this is a substantial lantern for either side of a front door, a garage entrance or a gate pillar with a flat wall face. It carries an IP44 rating, so it copes with wind driven rain and splashing far better than a basic porch light, making it a genuine all weather fitting rather than one that only wants a sheltered spot. The matching chain hung lantern in the same finish suits a covered porch roof instead of a flat wall.

How does this compare to the polished brass version? Same lantern, same dimensions, the only difference is the finish. This one is aged copper, a dark weathered brown, the other is a bright polished brass.

Does it come with bulbs? No. It takes two E14 candle bulbs and dimmable LEDs are a sensible choice if you want to use a dimmer switch.

Can I fit this somewhere fully exposed to the weather? Yes, it carries an IP44 rating, which covers splashing and driving rain from any direction, so it suits an open wall as well as a sheltered one.
