This is the polished brass version of Quoizel's large Newbury chain lantern, a hexagonal lantern in cast solid brass with bevelled glass on every face. Where its aged copper twin has already settled into a quiet brown, this one is bright and mirror like from the day it goes up, and it stays that way as a polished finish rather than one left to weather.

Choosing Polished Brass

Polished brass is the lighter and more reflective of the two finishes offered on this lantern. It throws back more light from the porch bulbs and glass than the aged copper version, so it tends to suit a brighter, more formal entrance, a period door painted in a pale colour, or ironwork and house numbers already in brass or gold tones. If you would rather have a finish that ages and darkens naturally outdoors, the aged copper version of this same lantern is built to the same design.

How It Works

Two E14 candle bulbs sit inside the glass, and these are not included, so plan on a pair of your own, ideally dimmable LEDs. The fitting is Class I, which means it needs a proper earth connection, and because it hangs from a ceiling or porch beam it should go up via a qualified electrician rather than as a DIY job. Fit dimmable bulbs and it will work happily on a dimmer switch.

Where It Works Best

This is the same generously proportioned lantern as its aged copper sibling, built for a covered porch, portico or entrance canopy rather than a small alcove. At 4.3kg it is slightly lighter than the copper version, a difference that comes down to the finish rather than the size. It carries an IP23 rating, so it wants a roof or canopy overhead rather than a fully open wall exposed to driving rain.

Quoizel joined the Phillips family in 1964, when Ira Phillips came in as Director of Merchandising and Sales. He went on to buy the company outright in 1986, and it has stayed privately held and family run ever since, first under Michael Chaikin who founded it in 1930, then under the Phillips family. That continuity of ownership is part of why classic lantern shapes like this one have stayed in the range for so long rather than being redesigned every few years.

How does this compare to the aged copper version? Same lantern and the same size, the difference is entirely the finish. This one is a bright polished brass that stays shiny, the other is a dark aged copper that weathers over time.

Does it come with bulbs? No. It takes two E14 candle bulbs and we would recommend dimmable LEDs if you want to use it on a dimmer switch.

Is it suitable for a fully exposed wall? It carries an IP23 rating, which covers light spray rather than driving rain, so it is happiest under a porch roof or canopy.
