An Open Cage Ring for a Vintage Glow

The New Harbor semi flush strips the design back to two plain steel rings crossed by a straight bar, with four bulb holders angled outward in a cross at the centre. There is no shade to hide behind, so the bulbs themselves become the visible detail, and the plain metalwork gives the fitting an open, airy look rather than a heavy one.

Western Bronze, Left Completely Unadorned

Every part of this fitting, rings, bar and bulb holders, is finished in the same Western Bronze, a warm, dark brown with none of the ornamentation you would find on more decorative ranges. The studio photography shows it fitted with vintage look filament bulbs to demonstrate the open cage design, but bulbs are not included, so choose your own to set the tone, from a warm filament look to a plain frosted LED.

How It Works

This fitting takes four E27 bulbs, not supplied, and is dimmable if you fit dimmable bulbs, though it has no dimmer built in. It is Class I, so it needs an earthed supply, and as a ceiling fitting it should be installed by a qualified electrician.

Where It Works Best

Quoizel lists the New Harbor for kitchens and dining rooms, where the open cage design and four exposed bulbs work well over an island or table without a shade getting in the way of the light. At 45.7cm across and only 26.7cm deep, it sits close enough to the ceiling to clear a standard kitchen worktop without anyone catching their head on it.

From Oil Lamps to Wired Ceiling Lights

Quoizel began in 1930 as a small Manhattan lamp company, and its first products were hurricane lamps that burned oil rather than electricity. As houses were wired up through the twentieth century the company moved with them, into hardwired chandeliers, pendants and ceiling fittings like New Harbor, where the fitting itself has become simple enough to let the bulb do the talking rather than a shade.
