The Maybeck table lamp puts the same angular art glass shade on a bronze column that stands at a normal table lamp height, so it works as reading light beside a chair or as an accent on a sideboard rather than a light for a whole room. The shade throws a warm, uneven glow through the glass rather than a flat white light.

One Valiant Bronze Finish, No Two Shades Alike

The base and stem are finished in Valiant Bronze, a dark bronze with a reddish cast that shows on the flared trumpet foot and the carved chevron detail running up the column. The shade above it is hand selected art glass in blue grey, amber, cream and small deep red accents, cut and leaded in radiating Prairie School lines, and because each sheet of glass is unique the pattern on your lamp will differ slightly from the next one made.

How It Works

This lamp takes two E27 bulbs, not supplied, each controlled by its own pull chain beneath the shade. It is dimmable if you fit dimmable bulbs, though the lamp has no dimmer built in. It is Class I, so it must be earthed, which is handled by its three pin plug, and being a freestanding table lamp there is no hardwired installation involved, it simply plugs in.

Where It Works Best

Quoizel suggests the Maybeck table lamp for living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms and hallways, anywhere you have a side table, console or sideboard to put it on. At 62.9cm tall and 40.6cm wide it needs a decent sized surface, so choose the floor lamp at 157.8cm tall where you would rather stand the light on the floor, or the flush fitting where you want the same glass overhead instead.

From New York to the Carolina Low Country

Quoizel moved its headquarters, manufacturing and distribution out of New York in 1996, relocating to a 305,000 square foot facility near Charleston, South Carolina, where it still operates. The design studio there draws on the low country setting, though the hand pieced glasswork tradition on show in the Maybeck shade goes back further than the move, to the stained glass specialism the company built its name on.
