The Small Livingston, One Lamp, Plenty Of Character
Not every doorway needs a big light. This single lamp Livingston keeps the same boxy coach lamp shape as its larger relatives but in a compact size, one bulb glowing behind seeded glass, a peaked cap on top and fluted trim front and back. It is an easy fit for a narrower porch or a side passage.
The Bronze Finish, Up Close
Imperial Bronze is the only finish available at this size, and up close it sits nearer black than brown, with the bronze only really showing on the raised ribbing along the top and base. Because the glass is seeded rather than plain, the single bulb behind it scatters into a soft, uneven light instead of one bright point, which is part of the charm of this style.
How It Works
It takes a single E27 bulb, not supplied, so you will need to source your own. The fitting is Class I, so it needs an earthed connection, and it will dim provided you fit a dimmable bulb, since there is no dimming circuitry built into the lantern itself. It carries an IP44 rating, giving it solid protection against driving rain and general outdoor damp. As a hardwired fitting it should be installed by a qualified electrician.
Where It Works Best
At 28.3cm tall and 14.3cm wide, this is the smallest of the three Livingston sizes, and the only one with a single lamp. The medium version steps up to 35.6cm with two lights, and the large to 42cm with three, both throwing more light across a wider spread. This small version suits a narrow porch, a side door, or anywhere a pair of lanterns either side of an opening would otherwise crowd each other.
From Oil Lamps To A Household Name
Quoizel began in 1930 as a small lamp company in Manhattan, and its earliest products were hurricane lamps burning oil rather than electricity. One of those early designs, the Abigail Adams lamp, stayed in the catalogue for decades after the company had otherwise moved on to electric fittings. This small Livingston lantern is a long way removed from those oil burning originals, but the same instinct for a compact, characterful lamp shape carries through.
