The Livingston, Built For A Bigger Doorway
Three lamps instead of one changes the character of a lantern completely. This large Livingston keeps the same boxy, coach lamp profile as the rest of the range, but scaled up and lit from three points inside the glass rather than one, so it reads as the statement piece of the family rather than a modest accent.
The Bronze Finish, Up Close
This large size is offered in a single finish, Imperial Bronze, and the photographs show it sitting darker than its name suggests, closer to a soft black with warm bronze highlights picked out along the fluted top and base trim. The seeded glass panels are thick and visibly textured, breaking the light from the three bulbs into an uneven, flickering looking glow rather than a flat wash.
How It Works
It takes 3 x E14 bulbs, which are not supplied, so you will need to add your own. The fitting is Class I, meaning it must be properly earthed, and it will dim if you fit dimmable bulbs, since there is no dimming circuitry built into the fitting itself. An IP44 rating means it is built to shrug off driving rain and general outdoor damp. It is a hardwired fitting, so have it installed by a qualified electrician.
Where It Works Best
At 42cm tall and 20.8cm wide, this is the largest of the three Livingston sizes and the only one with three lamps. The two light medium version is noticeably smaller at 35.6cm and the single light small version smaller again at 28.3cm, both giving a gentler pool of light suited to a standard door or narrow passage. This large version earns its size on a wide porch, either side of double doors, or anywhere a stronger, more generous spread of light is wanted.
A Family Business, Three Generations Deep
Ira Phillips joined Quoizel in 1964 as Director of Merchandising and Sales and went on to buy the company outright in 1986. It has stayed privately owned and family run in the years since, first under founder Michael Chaikin and then under the Phillips family, a continuity that is unusual for a company that has been designing lighting for close to a century.
