A Lantern With Some Backbone
This one does not try to look delicate. The Livingston medium wall lantern has a boxy, almost architectural shape, seeded glass panels held inside a dark bronze frame, with a peaked cap on top that gives it the silhouette of an old coach lamp. It suits either side of a front door or spaced along a run of garden wall.
The Bronze Finish, Up Close
Imperial Bronze is the only finish this medium size comes in, and in the photographs it reads closer to a deep charcoal than a warm brown, with a hint of bronze catching the light along the ribbed trim at the top and base. The seeded glass is genuinely textured rather than smooth, so it throws a slightly broken, dappled light rather than a flat beam, which suits the lantern shape well.
How It Works
Two E14 bulbs sit inside the lantern and they are not included, so bring your own on installation day. The fitting is Class I, which means it needs a proper earth connection, and dimming will work fine as long as you fit dimmable bulbs, since the fitting itself carries no dimming circuitry of its own. It carries an IP44 rating, so it copes well with wind driven rain and the general damp of an exposed wall. Being hardwired, it should be fitted by a qualified electrician.
Where It Works Best
At 35.6cm tall and 18cm wide, this medium size sits between its two Livingston relatives. The single light version is a good deal shorter at 28.3cm and takes just one bulb, better suited to a narrow porch or a passage where a modest glow is enough. The three light large version is taller again at 42cm and considerably brighter with three lamps, more suited to a wide entrance or either side of a garage door. This medium, two light size is the one most people choose for a standard front door, bright enough to be useful without dominating the brickwork.
The Shift From Oil To Electric
Quoizel started out in 1930 as a small lamp company in Manhattan, and its very first products were hurricane lamps that burned oil rather than electricity. As homes electrified through the following decades the company moved with them, turning its attention to hardwired chandeliers, pendants, sconces and wall lanterns like this one. The Livingston range belongs to that later, electrified chapter of the company's history, though the coach lamp shape still nods at where it began.
