A Table Lamp That Throws Warm, Patterned Light
Sitting on a console or side table, the Laguna table lamp casts light in the same warm ring as its floor standing sibling, at a height that suits a sofa side table or a hallway console rather than a reading corner. The mosaic tile band running around the shade catches the light from within, so it looks as good switched off as lit.
Renaissance Copper, Read In The Details
Like the rest of the Laguna range, this table lamp is finished in Renaissance Copper, though what you are actually looking at is a dark bronzed metal cage holding panels of taupe mica, with a horizontal stripe of small copper toned glass tiles set into the centre. The mica takes on an amber, almost parchment colour once lit, while the tile band stays a cooler, textured brown and green even in daylight. Two pull chains hang below the shade, letting you run each lamp independently.
How It Works
Two E27 bulbs are needed and are not included, which suits the mica shade well since you can choose a warm LED to match its natural glow. The lamp is Class I, so it needs an earthed connection, and it will only dim if you fit dimmable bulbs of your own choosing, there is no dimmer built into the base. Being a table lamp it simply plugs in, no hardwired work involved, though the shade arrives needing a short straightforward assembly onto the stem before use.
Where It Works Best
At 63.5cm tall with the same 40.6cm shade as the floor lamp, this is the table top version of the design, built for a console, sideboard, or a pair either side of a bed. Where the floor lamp lights a whole seating area from standing height, the table lamp puts a warmer, closer pool of light where you actually sit or work, and its 20cm base needs less surface space than you might expect for a shade this wide.
Ira Phillips And The Family Behind Quoizel
Ira Phillips joined Quoizel in 1964 as Director of Merchandising and Sales, and went on to buy the company outright in 1986. Decades later Quoizel is still privately owned and run by the Phillips family, one of the few lighting names of its size to have stayed that way. It is the kind of continuity that shows up in details like this shade, where the mica and tile combination has clearly been worked out by people who have made lamps for a long time.
