Light Bounced Off The Ceiling
The Kami torchiere sends its light straight upward off the ceiling rather than out into the room, filling a corner with a soft, indirect glow.
One Finish, Read In The Glass
As with the rest of the Kami range this floor lamp comes only in Vintage Bronze, so the choice sits in the glass pattern. The upturned bowl shade carries pale lilac and soft grey florals against warm amber and green leaf glass, a lighter, more muted palette than the deeper reds and purples on the hanging Kami pieces, since this shade is seen mostly from below and to the side rather than head on. The tall reeded pole and fluted round base are cast in the same dark bronze finish as the shade trim.
How It Works
A single E27 lamp sits in the upturned bowl, bulb not supplied, controlled by a rotary switch on the neck just below the shade rather than a pull chain or floor pedal. It is Class I, needing an earth connection through its plug, and dims only with a dimmable bulb fitted. The lamp stands 177.8cm tall with a shade 35.6cm across, and at 9.5kg the weight sits mostly in the base, which helps keep it steady. Being a plug in floor lamp, it needs no hardwired installation, just a nearby socket.
Where It Works Best
Its height and upward throw suit a living room or bedroom corner where you want to lift the light in the room without adding another ceiling point, and it works equally well in a dining room or hallway. With only one lamp behind a single upturned shade it gives a softer, more general wash than the two or three lamp ceiling pieces in the Kami range, and unlike the table lamp it needs floor space rather than a surface to stand on.
From Oil Lamps To Electric Light
Quoizel began in 1930 making hurricane lamps that burned oil, and the Abigail Adams lamp from that era stayed in the catalogue for decades after. As homes were wired for electricity the company moved from portable oil lamps into hardwired chandeliers, pendants and sconces, though pieces like this floor standing torchiere still carry something of that original portable lamp idea, just running on electric light instead of oil.
