A Floor Lamp That Glows Like A Stained Glass Window
Switch on the Inglenook floor lamp and the room gets a warm geometric wash of amber, honey and blue light, thrown down through a hand cut art glass shade built the way traditional Tiffany studios built theirs. It stands tall enough to read by from an armchair without a side table in the way.
The Valiant Bronze Finish
This Inglenook comes in a single finish, valiant bronze, and it is worth knowing what that looks like close up rather than just as a swatch name. The metal column, stepped square base and shade frame are all a deep aged brown bronze with a slightly uneven, hand rubbed look rather than a flat paint finish. Set against it, the glass runs from pale cream and honey gold through soft green and sapphire blue, with small burgundy red accent squares picking out the border pattern. It is the classic Arts and Crafts colour palette, not a bright or garish mix.
How It Works
Two E27 bulbs sit under the shade, controlled independently by the two pull chains visible just below the glass. Bulbs are not supplied, so pick warm white LEDs to suit the glass tones. The fitting is Class I, which means it needs a proper earth connection, and dimming only works if you fit dimmable bulbs and a compatible dimmer switch, the fitting itself has no built in dimming. At 157.5cm tall and 43.2cm across the shade, it is a genuinely large floor lamp, so allow proper space around an armchair or sofa end.
Where It Works Best
This is a corner or armchair lamp rather than a hallway piece, living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms and hallways with the height to take it are all listed as suitable rooms. Within the wider Inglenook range it is the only floor standing option, so if you already have the table lamp or a wall fitting elsewhere in the room, this brings the same glass pattern down to seating height instead of up on a table or wall.
The Story Behind Quoizel
Quoizel started in 1930 as a small lamp company in Manhattan, and its first products were not electric at all, they were oil burning hurricane lamps. One of those early designs, the Abigail Adams lamp, stayed in the catalogue for decades after the company had long since moved into electric lighting. That early grounding in glass and flame lit lamps is still visible in ranges like Inglenook, where the shade is doing as much of the work as the bulb underneath it.
