A Warm Glow With An Industrial Edge
Griffin takes the classic schoolhouse shade and gives it a slightly rugged finish. Bubbled, seeded glass sits inside a dark bronze frame, with warm brass catching the light on the lamp holders and the finial below. It sits close to the ceiling but reads as a real fixture, not an afterthought.
Reading The Finish
This medium Griffin comes in Palladian Bronze with Weathered Brass detailing. The bronze covers the main frame, the curved arms and the ceiling rose, while weathered brass turns up on the lamp holders, the centre stem collar and the ball finial underneath the shade. In the photographs the bronze reads dark and slightly matte, and the brass sits warm and a little antiqued next to it, not shiny or yellow. If you already have brass door furniture or taps nearby, this pairing will sit comfortably alongside them.
How It Works
This fitting takes four E27 bulbs, arranged around the centre stem beneath the seeded glass bowl, and bulbs are not included so you can choose your own look. An Edison style filament bulb suits the exposed design best. It is Class I, which means it needs a proper earth connection, and dimming only works if you fit dimmable bulbs and pair them with a compatible dimmer switch. Because this is a hardwired ceiling fitting, it should be installed by a qualified electrician.
Where It Works Best
This is the larger of the two clear glass Griffin sizes, at 35.6cm high and 52.8cm across the shade, so it suits a kitchen or dining room with reasonable ceiling height, over an island or a good sized table. Against the smaller Griffin in the same finish, which measures 42.2cm across and carries three lamps, this one throws more light from its four bulbs and fills a wider circle of ceiling.
The Company Behind Quoizel
Quoizel started in 1930 in Manhattan, when Michael Chaikin began making oil burning hurricane lamps rather than anything electric. Griffin belongs to a company that has spent the best part of a century adapting old lamp shapes, and this seeded glass bowl with its exposed bulbs nods to that early lit look, just wired for a modern ceiling.

Questions People Ask

What bulbs does it take? Four E27 bulbs, not included. Choose a filament or Edison style bulb to suit the exposed seeded glass.
Can I dim it? Yes, but only if you fit dimmable bulbs and use it with a compatible dimmer switch.
