Warm Brass Framing A Quiet White Glow

This is the plainest of the Griffin flush lights and probably the easiest to place. A soft white glass bowl sits close under the ceiling, held by two curved brass arms, with nothing else competing for attention.

Choosing Weathered Brass

Weathered Brass here is a matte, slightly antiqued gold, warmer and quieter than a bright polished brass would be. In the close photographs you can see the finish has been deliberately taken down a touch, so it catches light softly along the arms rather than throwing back a hard shine. The bowl is opaque opal glass, plain white from every angle. If you want a cooler metal, the same fitting comes in polished chrome, or in Palladian Bronze for something darker. Quoizel also builds a version that mixes Palladian Bronze with weathered brass accents around a seeded glass bowl, which is the one to pick if you want the lamps themselves on show.

How It Works

Three E27 lamp holders sit on a central stem inside the bowl, angled outward so the opal glass turns them into one even wash of light rather than three separate hot spots. Bulbs are not supplied, and there is no integrated LED, so whether it dims comes down entirely to the lamps you fit. It is Class I, which means the ceiling point needs an earth connection, and as a hardwired fitting it needs a qualified electrician to put it up. A stepped ceiling plate carries two curved arms down to ball joints at the rim of the bowl, with a rail running underneath and a small turned finial gathering the glass from below.

Where It Works Best

Kitchens and dining rooms are the natural fit, and it earns its place equally well in a hallway or a bedroom where a pendant would hang too low. Like every other finish in the Griffin flush range it measures 42.2cm across and 19.4cm high, so nothing about the size changes between finishes, only the metal and, on one sibling, the glass. If the ceiling allows more drop, the semi flush Griffin carries the same bowl lower on a short stem instead of sitting tight to the plaster.

Quoizel Since 1930

Quoizel started out in Manhattan in 1930 selling oil burning hurricane lamps, well before the fittings it makes now needed a plug or a ceiling rose at all. One of those early lamps, the Abigail Adams, stayed in the catalogue for decades. As homes were wired for electricity the company moved with them, building the chandeliers, pendants and ceiling lights that make up most of its range today, this fitting among them. It has stayed a family concern throughout, run by the Phillips family since Ira Phillips bought the company outright in 1986.

Questions People Ask

How is this different from the bronze and brass version with the seeded glass? That sibling shows its lamps through clear bubbled glass. This one hides them behind a plain opal bowl, so the light is softer and more diffuse.

What bulbs does it take? Three E27 screw fit lamps, not included. A warm white LED suits the opal glass well.

Does it dim? Only if you fit dimmable lamps. There is no driver or integrated LED built in, so the bulb makes that decision.
