Three Lamps Behind Bubbled Glass
This is the Griffin flush that shows its workings. The bowl is clear glass shot through with tiny trapped bubbles, so the lamps inside stay visible and the light comes out sparkling rather than soft.
Bronze With Brass Accents, Up Close
The frame is Palladian Bronze, a dark coffee brown with almost a black cast in shadow. The weathered brass is used sparingly and deliberately: sleeves on each lamp holder, the ball joints where the rail meets the arms, and the ball on the finial under the bowl. In the detail photographs that brass reads as a soft antiqued gold with the shine knocked off it, not bright polished lacquer. The seeded glass carries visible bubbles across the whole surface, denser in some patches than others, which is how genuine seeded glass behaves. Choose this one if you like a filament on display. The plain opal versions in Palladian Bronze, polished chrome and weathered brass hide the lamps and give a softer, more diffuse light instead.
How It Works
Three E27 holders sit on a central bronze stem inside the bowl, the lamps lying outward from the middle. Because the glass is clear you see them, which is why Edison style lamps with a visible filament suit it and why plain frosted bulbs tend to look wrong. Bulbs are not supplied. Nothing here is an integrated LED, so dimming is purely a matter of fitting dimmable lamps. It is a Class I fitting, so the ceiling point must have an earth, and wiring it in is work for a qualified electrician. Curved arms run out from the stepped ceiling plate and turn down to ball joints at the widest point, with a second rail crossing the glass below them, and a finial threads on underneath to hold the bowl.
Where It Works Best
Over a kitchen island or a dining table it does good work, because clear glass and a visible filament reward being looked at from below. It also suits a hallway with a low ceiling, or a landing. Sizing is identical to the rest of the flush Griffins at 42.2cm across and 19.4cm high with three lamps, so the choice between them comes down to glass and finish. This is the only flush Griffin with clear seeded glass and the only one that sets brass against bronze. If you want the same silhouette dropped lower on a stem, look at the semi flush Griffins.
Quoizel, The Company Behind It
Quoizel began in 1930 selling hurricane lamps that burned oil. Electricity changed the business completely. As houses were wired the company moved away from portable oil lamps towards fittings that had to be connected: chandeliers, pendants, wall sconces, ceiling lights like this one. Something of the older habit survives in the Griffin though. A visible filament behind clear glass is not far off the point of a hurricane lamp, which was always partly about watching the flame.

Questions People Ask
Will I see the bulbs? Yes, clearly. The glass is clear with seeded bubbles in it, so choose lamps you are happy to look at. Edison style E27 filament lamps are the natural match.
Is it the same size as the opal glass version? Same body and the same measurements, 42.2cm across and 19.4cm high. Only the glass and the finish differ, and the weight by a tenth of a kilo.
Does it dim? Only if the lamps you fit are dimmable. There is no driver or integrated LED involved, so the bulb decides.
