Bronze Rails Around A Bowl Of Soft Light

Not every ceiling can spare the height for a pendant. This one hands you a wide opal glass bowl caged by slim bronze rails, sitting under 20cm off the plaster. Once it is up, it reads more like a piece of ironwork than a lamp shade.

Choosing The Palladian Bronze

Palladian Bronze is a deep coffee brown rather than black. The close photographs show a satin sheen with a faint reddish warmth where light runs along the curve of the arms, and a darker tone sunk into the steps of the ceiling plate. Against white plaster it stays quiet. Against a darker painted ceiling it holds its own. The glass is opal white and opaque, so the metal is the only colour your eye picks up. Two other routes exist here. Polished chrome nearly vanishes into a pale ceiling, and weathered brass runs warmer and softer. If you would rather see the lamps than hide them, the clear seeded glass version with brass accents puts them on show.

How It Works

Three E27 lamp holders sit on a central hub inside the bowl with the lamps pointing outward, so the opal glass turns the output into one even wash and lets a little spill past the rim onto the ceiling. Bulbs are not supplied. There is no integrated LED, so dimming depends entirely on buying dimmable lamps. It is Class I, meaning an earth connection is required at the ceiling point, and as a hardwired fitting it should go in by a qualified electrician. The build is honest and on show: a stepped plate covers the ceiling point, curved arms arch out and down to ball joints at the rim, a rail wraps the bowl at its widest, and a turned finial underneath pulls the glass up tight.

Where It Works Best

Kitchens and dining rooms are the obvious homes for it. It also earns its keep in a hallway or a bedroom where the ceiling is low and anything hanging would be in the way. At 42.2cm across it is a broad disc, so give it some floor to preside over. Within the Griffin flush family this is the bronze and opal pairing: 42.2cm wide, 19.4cm high, three lamps, mounted close to the plaster. The seeded glass sibling shares those measurements but shows its bulbs. The semi flush Griffins hang lower on a short stem, which is the answer when the ceiling height is generous.

Quoizel has only had two families in charge. Michael Chaikin founded it in Manhattan in 1930. Ira Phillips arrived in 1964 as Director of Merchandising and Sales, and bought the company outright in 1986. It is still privately held and still run by the Phillips family, which is the plainest explanation for why a fitting like this keeps details nobody would miss if they were dropped: the ball tips on the rails, the steps in the ceiling plate, the little finial under the glass.
