A Garden Caught In Glass

Cobalt is built around a shade made from hundreds of small pieces of coloured glass, fitted together the way a stained glass window is, not printed or moulded to look that way. Deep cobalt blue and soft lavender dominate towards the crown, breaking into paler blue, green and cream tones as the pattern opens out toward the scalloped edge. It sits on a dark, substantial bronze base with an Art Nouveau stem, the kind of lamp you buy to be looked at as much as switched on.

One Finish, Properly Considered

There is only one colourway on offer here, so it is worth describing properly rather than glossing over it. The base, stem and gallery are cast in a vintage bronze finish, close to a warm black with bronze highlights picked out along the leaf detailing where the stem meets the shade. The glass itself carries the colour, cobalt and violet blue through the upper two thirds, with cream, pale green and soft pink glass worked in around the lower rim. Two pull cord switches hang down either side of the stem for control.

How It Works

Cobalt takes three E27 bulbs, which are not supplied, so you can choose your own wattage and warmth to suit the glass. It will dim, but only if you fit dimmable bulbs, standard ones will not respond to a dimmer switch. The fitting is wired to Class I, which means it needs a proper earth connection as part of a normal mains installation. As a table lamp it needs no hardwired installation, it plugs in once bulbs are fitted, ready to sit on a surface and switch on at the cord.

At 69cm tall with a shade spanning 47.1cm, this is a big single lamp, not a companion piece. It wants a console table, a wide sideboard or a substantial nightstand rather than a small side table where the shade would overwhelm the surface. Living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms and hallways all suit it, anywhere the glass can be seen properly and lit from within once the lamp is on, rather than tucked into a corner.

Quoizel built a large part of its reputation on stained glass work in this style, extending techniques used in traditional glass lamps into chandeliers, pendants and wall lights over the years. The company started in 1930 as a small lamp maker in Manhattan, founded by Michael Chaikin, and the glasswork tradition it developed then still shapes pieces like Cobalt today. It has stayed under family ownership throughout, run by the Phillips family since Ira Phillips bought the business outright in 1986.

How many bulbs does Cobalt take? Three E27 bulbs, not included, so you can pick your own brightness and colour temperature.

Will it work with a dimmer switch? Only if you fit dimmable E27 bulbs. With standard bulbs the lamp will not dim, even on a dimmer circuit.

Does it need an electrician to install? No, it is a plug in table lamp rather than a hardwired fitting, though it is Class I so it should go into a properly earthed socket.
