A Desk Lamp Built Around Its Shade

The Chastain's cone shaped shade is the whole point of this lamp: small pieces of art glass in amber, honey and deep jewel tones, leaded together panel by panel over a bronze frame. Two pull chains hang beneath it, one for each lamp, on a mission style base of stacked bronze bars.

Vintage Bronze, Inside And Out

Vintage Bronze covers the whole metal structure, the base, the stem and the shade's cap and ribs, in a deep aged tone with visible texture rather than a smooth plated finish. The glass itself does the colour work: pale honey and amber panels running down from the cap, with a band of richer patterned glass, blues, purples and ambers, set around the rim. It's the same material combination throughout the range, so there's no separate colour choice to make on this SKU.

How It Works

Two E27 lamps sit inside the shade, each controlled by its own pull chain on the base. Bulbs are not supplied. It stands 57.2cm tall on a square footed mission style base, and being a plug in table lamp it needs no hardwired installation, just a socket to plug into. It is Class I, so it must be earthed through a three pin plug. Dimming works only if you fit dimmable lamps and plug it into a compatible dimmer. At 8.6kg it's a genuinely substantial lamp, and the shade arrives packed separately from the base, so take care lifting it out of the box and seat the shade on the fitting before switching on.

Where It Works Best

This is a lamp for a console table, a large desk or a sideboard rather than a small side table, since the shade alone is wide enough to want space around it. Two independent pull chains mean you can run it on a single lamp for background light or both for reading. Its scale and the double socket set up put it more in living room or hallway territory than on a small bedside table.

Tiffany Glass, Still The Quoizel Signature

Quoizel built one of its strongest reputations on Tiffany style leaded glass work, and pieces like this desk lamp are a direct descendant of that specialism, extended over the decades from table lamps into pendants and wall fittings too. The company has kept the skill in house since it was founded in Manhattan in 1930 by Michael Chaikin, through the move to a purpose built site near Charleston, South Carolina in 1996, where the design studio still works today.

Does it need an electrician to fit? No, it's a plug in table lamp. Just plug it into a standard socket, there is no hardwiring involved.

Can both lamps be dimmed? Yes, provided you fit dimmable E27 lamps in both sockets and plug the lamp into a compatible dimmer. Each pull chain switches its own lamp independently.

Is the shade fitted or does it need assembling? The shade is packed separately from the base for safe transit and sits onto the fitting at the top of the stem. It's a heavy, handmade piece so handle it gently when you unpack it.
