The Small One, For Doorways Without Much Room

Not every wall can carry a big lantern. A narrow porch pier, the strip of brick beside a stable door, a courtyard passage: put anything larger there and it crowds the space. At 24.8cm tall and 14.6cm across, this is the compact end of the Cedar Point range, and it reaches only 18.2cm out from the wall, so it stays clear of anyone walking past it.

Black Metalwork, Seeded Glass Panels

Look closely at the glass and you will see it is not smooth. Fine bubbles and drifting streaks run right through it, so a bare filament never shows as a hard point of light. The frame over it is a matt black with a faint grain to the surface, and slim bars are laid across the top and bottom of each pane in an interlocking square pattern, the sort of geometry Arts and Crafts joiners used in leaded windows. The base is glazed as well, so light drops down the wall instead of stopping at the bottom edge.

How It Works

The lantern hangs from a squared arm that reaches over the top of the roof from a stepped rectangular backplate, which keeps the fixing point high and the glazed body swinging clear beneath it. Inside, a single E27 lamp sits on an upright holder. Nothing is sealed in, so bulbs are simply replaced and the choice of warmth and output stays with you. Fit a dimmable lamp and it will dim. Wiring is Class I, so an earth is needed.

Where It Works Best

Two of these either side of a front door read as a proper pair without dominating the elevation, and the same size repeats well along a garden wall or a run of outbuildings where a larger fitting would look heavy. If you want more presence over a single entrance, the medium and large sizes carry the identical design upward, and the chain and pedestal versions cover porch ceilings and pathways. IP44 protection means rain and splashing are not a problem.

Quoizel, The Company Behind It

The name over the door has changed hands only once in nearly a century. Michael Chaikin opened Quoizel as a small lamp business in Manhattan in 1930. Ira Phillips arrived in 1964 to run merchandising and sales, and by 1986 he had bought the company outright, which is how it became a Phillips family concern, still privately held and still run by the family today. That kind of continuity tends to show up in the catalogue as ranges that stay in production long enough for you to buy a matching second fitting years later.

Questions People Ask

Is this big enough for a front door? On its own, beside a standard front door, most people find the medium size sits better. This small size comes into its own in pairs, in tight recesses, and on secondary doors, side passages and outbuildings.

Which way round does it fix? The arm mounts above the lantern rather than behind it, so the backplate sits higher than the glass and the lantern hangs below the fixing. Worth allowing for when you mark out the position.

What sort of bulb suits it? Any E27 lamp. A warm white LED keeps the seeded glass looking amber rather than clinical, and a clear or lightly frosted bulb shows the bubbles in the glass far better than an opaque one.
