A Lantern For The Top Of A Pier Or A Post
This is the version that sits on something rather than hanging from it. A fluted collar and a square mounting plate with four fixing holes let it bolt down flat onto a brick gate pier, a low garden wall, a plinth or a suitable post, and a small stepped pyramid cap on the roof gives it a finished top edge that the wall lanterns do not have. Overall it stands 44.5cm tall, of which the glazed lantern accounts for 28.1cm.
Black Finish, Seeded Glass, Fluted Base
Everything above the stem matches the rest of the Cedar Point range: matt black aluminium, clear seeded glass on all four faces and in the base, slim squared bars crossing the panes top and bottom. What is specific to this one is what happens underneath. The stem swells out into a ribbed, fan shaped collar before it meets the square base plate, a piece of traditional detailing that stops the lantern looking as though it has simply been dropped onto a post and left there.
How It Works
A single E27 lamp stands upright in the centre of the lantern, and the seeded glass spreads the light in all four directions plus downward through the glazed base, which matters when the fitting is at waist or chest height beside a path. There is no integrated LED module, so bulbs are replaceable and the colour temperature is yours to choose. Dimming depends on the lamp. The base plate takes four fixings and the supply cable comes up through the centre of the stem, so whatever it sits on needs a cable route drilled through it. Class I wiring, earth required, IP44 rated.
Where It Works Best
Gate piers, driveway entrances, the tops of low walls, plinths beside a flight of steps, pathway posts. Mounted as a pair on matching piers it does a lot of work at the entrance to a property, marking the opening without needing a floodlight. Where there is no flat top to fix to, the three wall sizes in the range handle vertical surfaces and the chain version handles porch ceilings, all in the same design.

Quoizel has form for keeping a good design in production. Its Abigail Adams lamp, a survivor from the early oil lit years, stayed in the catalogue for decades. The business itself dates to 1930, when Michael Chaikin opened a small lamp company in Manhattan selling hurricane lamps that ran on oil rather than electricity, and it has stayed in private family hands ever since, moving south to Charleston, South Carolina in 1996.

Questions People Ask
Does it come with a post? No. This is a pedestal head, designed to bolt down onto a flat surface you already have or intend to build, such as a brick gate pier, a rendered plinth, a low wall top or a suitable timber or metal post.
Will it light a path? Partly. The glazed base throws light downward as well as sideways, so at pier height it does put usable light onto the ground nearby, but it is a decorative marker rather than a floodlight. For a wider spread you would want more than one, or a taller lamp post.
How is it fixed and wired? Four fixings through the square base plate, with the supply cable brought up through the middle of the stem, which means the surface underneath needs a hole drilled for the cable. It is a Class I fitting requiring an earth, so we recommend a qualified electrician makes the connection.
