The Size Most Front Doors Actually Want

There is one size of wall lantern that suits an ordinary front elevation, and this is usually it. At 32.6cm tall it has enough height to register from the pavement without looming over the door frame, and at 19.7cm across it keeps its proportions on a standard brick pier. Of the three Cedar Point wall sizes, this is the one that most often simply fits.

Choosing Black With Seeded Glass

Black is the safe answer on almost any exterior, and here it is a matt, lightly grained black that sits comfortably against red brick, render, stone and painted timber alike. What lifts it is the glass. Clear seeded panels, full of small trapped bubbles, catch daylight during the day and turn a bare lamp into something soft and uneven after dark. Slim bars cross the top and bottom of every pane in a squared, interlocking motif, and there is a glazed panel set into the base as well.

How It Works

A single E27 lamp stands upright inside the lantern, diffused by seeded glass on all four sides and downward through the glazed base. There is no built in LED, so a bulb change stays a bulb change rather than becoming a new fitting. Dimming works if the lamp does. The body is aluminium, which is the sensible material outdoors because it will not rust, and the whole lantern weighs 2.9kg. It mounts on a stepped rectangular backplate with the arm carrying over the roof, and it projects 22.9cm from the wall.

Where It Works Best

A front door, a back door, a garage side wall, a porch with no ceiling to hang anything from. Because the range runs from small through to large plus a chain lantern and a pedestal, a whole property can be lit in one design: this size at the door, the small size along a boundary wall, the pedestal marking the drive. IP44 covers rain and splashing, which is what a wall lantern on a house actually faces.

Questions People Ask

How high should it be mounted? As a rule of thumb, a wall lantern beside a door looks right with the centre of the glass a little above eye level, which puts it somewhere around head height on most standard doorways. Mounting it too high throws the light over your head instead of onto the threshold.

What is the difference between this and the large? Height and reach, nothing else. This one is 32.6cm tall and projects 22.9cm; the large is 41.8cm tall and projects 28.6cm. Same design, same seeded glass, same single E27 lamp.

Does it need an electrician? Yes. It is a hardwired Class I fitting that requires an earth connection, so we recommend installation by a qualified electrician.
