Lamplight On A Chain, Above The Front Step
Hang this over a porch, a covered entry or a deep recessed doorway and it stops reading as a light fitting and starts reading as a small lit room. The pitched black roof, the four panels of seeded glass, the slim bars laid across the head and foot of every pane: it is the Arts and Crafts vocabulary, kept plain and kept honest. The chain lets it sit at whatever height the ceiling gives you.
Black Frame, Clear Seeded Glass
The finish is a flat, softly grained black, closer to cast iron than to gloss paint, and it holds shadow well in bright daylight. Behind it sits clear seeded glass, shot through with fine trapped bubbles and faint drawn streaks, so a lit lamp reads as a warm smudge rather than a hard point. Glass wraps all four sides and the base is glazed too, which means light falls straight down onto the step as well as out across the porch.
How It Works
One E27 lamp stands upright inside, and the seeded glass does the diffusing. There is no driver and no integrated LED module, so the fitting will outlast several generations of bulb and the colour temperature is your choice rather than the manufacturer's. Fit a dimmable lamp and it dims. The lantern hangs on a chain from a 12.5cm square ceiling canopy, adjustable between a 45.4cm and a 202.4cm drop, so a low porch soffit and a double height entrance hall are both covered by the same product.
Where It Works Best
This is the hanging member of a family that also runs to three wall sizes and a pedestal, so a door light and a matching lantern over the path can share one design language. Use the chain version where there is something overhead to fix to: a porch roof, a car port, a covered walkway, a deep entrance recess. Where there is no ceiling, the wall lanterns do the same job flush against brickwork. The IP44 rating covers splashing water from any direction, which suits a sheltered outdoor position rather than a fully exposed one.
Made By Quoizel
Quoizel began in 1930 as a small Manhattan lamp company under Michael Chaikin, and its first trade was hurricane lamps that burned oil rather than anything electric. That origin still shows in shapes like this one, where the whole idea is a contained flame behind glass. Ira Phillips joined in 1964 and bought the company outright in 1986, and it remains privately held and family run. In 1996 the entire operation moved south to a large site near Charleston, South Carolina, where it has been ever since.

Questions People Ask
Can it hang outside with nothing above it? The IP44 rating covers splashing water from any direction, but a chain hung lantern has to be fixed to a ceiling or soffit, so in practice it needs something overhead to mount to. For an open wall with no ceiling, the Cedar Point wall lanterns are the right choice.
How short can the chain go? The minimum drop is 45.4cm measured from the ceiling to the base of the lantern, and the maximum is 202.4cm. Surplus chain is removed during installation.
Is a bulb included? No. It takes one E27 lamp, which you supply, and that lets you pick the brightness and warmth yourself. Choose a dimmable lamp if you want it on a dimmer. A clear or lightly frosted bulb shows off the texture in the seeded glass better than a fully opaque one.
