A Stained Glass Shade on a Cast Bronze Base

This table lamp pairs the same leaded Tiffany style shade used across the Cambridge range with a solid cast metal base, tapering up from a hexagonal foot to a reeded column. Two pull chains under the shade let you switch each bulb independently.

The Glass and the Finish

The shade mixes cream and honey glass with burnt orange and small green accents, arranged in the same interlocking Art Nouveau pattern as the rest of the collection, all held together with dark leading and finished with a decorative finial on top. The cast base below is finished in Vintage Bronze, a deep, slightly antiqued bronze that matches the leading in the glass rather than contrasting with it.

How It Works

The lamp takes two E27 bulbs, not supplied, and is Class I rated, so it must be properly earthed through its plug. It will dim if you fit dimmable E27 bulbs, though the pull chains themselves are simple on and off switches. As a plug in table lamp it needs no hardwired installation, so it is ready to use as soon as you fit bulbs and plug it in.

Where It Works Best

At 59.7cm tall with a 40.5cm shade, this is the largest and heaviest piece to place in the Cambridge range at 4.8kg, so it suits a substantial side table or sideboard rather than a small bedside table. Where the semi flush and pendant versions of this design light a room from above, the table lamp gives the same glasswork as a warm, low level pool of light in a living room, bedroom or dining room.

Quoizel's first products, in 1930, were oil burning hurricane lamps rather than anything electric. One of them, the Abigail Adams lamp, stayed in the catalogue for decades after it was introduced, which says something about how the company treats a design it believes in.
