A Warmer Take On A Familiar Shape
The medium Byron in Imperial Bronze softens the same boxy lantern that runs through the whole range. Clear bevelled glass on three sides sits inside a mottled bronze frame, and behind the single bulb a hammered copper disc throws the light out rather than losing it in the glazing. Fitted either side of a front door it reads as proper exterior furniture rather than a standard porch light bolted on as an afterthought.
Imperial Bronze With Copper, Or Graphite With Pewter
Look closely at the photographs and the bronze finish shows real depth, a mottled rust brown patina rather than a flat paint colour, paired with a warm hammered copper disc behind the bulb. The graphite option available in this size swaps that for a cooler black frame and a silver toned pewter disc, a more contemporary pairing. Bronze suits brick, stone and a wooden door. Graphite sits better against grey render and black ironwork.
How It Works
A single E27 lampholder sits inside the frame with the hammered copper disc fixed to the backplate behind it. No bulb is included, so you will need to choose your own, and a filament style LED tends to suit the exposed lamp best. It will dim if you fit a dimmable bulb on a matching dimmer switch. This is a Class I fitting, meaning it needs an earth connection at the wall, and its IP44 rating means it shrugs off rain and windblown spray without trouble. Leave the wiring to a qualified electrician.
Where It Works Best
At 36.8cm tall, 20.3cm wide and 17.8cm deep, this medium size suits a standard front door or a garage side entrance, sitting between the large Byron at 45.7cm and the small at 30.5cm. All three share the same single lamp design and the same choice of two finishes, so a matched pair either side of a door in medium, with a smaller version somewhere less prominent, keeps a whole exterior looking considered rather than mismatched. At 4.4kg it needs a solid fixing but nothing out of the ordinary.
From Oil Lamps To Wired Light
Quoizel began in 1930 as a small lamp company in Manhattan, and its first products were hurricane lamps burning oil rather than electricity. As homes electrified through the following decades the company moved with them, turning its attention to hardwired chandeliers, pendants, sconces and wall fittings like this one. The single contained bulb behind a reflector disc still nods, in its own way, back to a single contained flame.

Questions People Ask
How does the medium compare with the large Byron? It is 8.9cm shorter, at 36.8cm against 45.7cm, and narrower too, so measure your door surround before choosing.
What bulb does it take? One E27 screw fit lamp, sold separately. Because the glass is fully clear, a decorative filament LED shows the fitting off well.
Will it work with a dimmer switch? Yes, as long as the bulb you fit is dimmable and paired with a compatible dimmer.
How is it fixed to the wall? Through a flat backplate at the top, onto a fixing solid enough to carry 4.4kg, ideally brick or a timber stud.
