The Same Big Lantern, A Warmer Metal
This is the large Byron in Imperial Bronze, the warmer of the two finishes available. Three sides of clear bevelled glass sit inside a substantial box frame, and behind the single bulb a hammered copper disc throws the light forward instead of letting it vanish into the glazing. It has real weight and presence, built for a wall that can take a proper fitting rather than a token porch light.
Imperial Bronze With Copper, Or Graphite With Pewter
Look closely at the photographs and the Imperial Bronze finish shows as a mottled, rust brown patina with real depth rather than a flat paint colour, and the disc behind the bulb is a warm hammered copper. The alternative Graphite finish is a cooler, textured charcoal black paired with a silver toned pewter disc, a more modern and severe look by comparison. Bronze suits brick, stone and timber doors. Graphite reads better against grey render and black ironwork.
How It Works
One E27 lampholder hangs from the top plate with the hammered copper disc mounted on the backplate behind it. No bulb is supplied, so choose your own. It will dim if the bulb fitted is a dimmable one on a compatible dimmer, otherwise it runs at full brightness. This is a Class I fitting, so it needs an earth connection at the wall, and its IP44 rating means it copes with rain and windblown spray without issue. Have it wired in by a qualified electrician.
Where It Works Best
At 45.7cm tall and projecting 21.6cm from the wall, this large Byron needs a wide elevation, a double garage or a tall entrance to sit properly, rather than a narrow porch where it would crowd the door. The same shape comes in a medium at 36.8cm and a small at 30.5cm, all single lamp fittings, so you can step down in size toward a side gate or outbuilding while keeping the same family look. At 6.6kg it is the heaviest of the three sizes and needs a solid fixing.
A Family Business For Three Generations Of Ownership
Ira Phillips joined Quoizel in 1964 as Director of Merchandising and Sales and went on to buy the company outright in 1986. It remains privately held today, having passed from founder Michael Chaikin's original ownership into the Phillips family's hands without ever becoming a public or corporate brand. That kind of continuity tends to show up in details like a reflector disc still being hammered rather than stamped flat.

Questions People Ask
How does this compare in size to the medium Byron? The large stands 45.7cm tall against 36.8cm for the medium, a difference of almost 9cm, so it is worth measuring your wall before choosing.
What bulb should I use? One E27 screw fit lamp, not included. A vintage style filament LED complements the exposed bulb and copper disc well.
How is it fixed to the wall? Through a flat backplate at the top of the fitting, onto a fixing capable of carrying 6.6kg, ideally brick or a timber stud.
Will it work on a dimmer switch? Yes, as long as you fit a dimmable bulb and pair it with a dimmer suited to that bulb type.
