A Lantern With Genuine Scale
Byron in its large size is not a shy little porch light. Clear bevelled glass wraps three sides of a graphite box frame, and behind the single bulb sits a hammered pewter disc that catches and throws the light forward rather than losing it in the glass. Stood on its own on a wide wall it reads as a proper piece of exterior furniture, not an afterthought bolted on beside the door.
Graphite With Pewter, Or Imperial Bronze With Copper
The finish choice changes the whole character of the piece. This is Graphite, a deep charcoal black with a fine sandy texture visible in the close photographs, and its reflector disc is a cool pewter grey with a dense hammered surface. The alternative, Imperial Bronze, swaps that combination for a mottled rust brown frame and a warmer, more weathered copper disc behind the bulb. Graphite sits comfortably against grey render, black window frames and anything contemporary. Imperial Bronze leans older and warmer, better suited to brick or timber.
How It Works
A single E27 lampholder drops down from the top plate into the centre of the box, with the hammered pewter disc fixed to the backplate directly behind it. Bulbs are not included, so pick your own to suit the look you want. It will dim if you fit a dimmable lamp on a matching dimmer switch, though the fitting itself does nothing to enable or block that. This is a Class I fitting, meaning it needs an earth connection at the wall, and it carries an IP44 rating so rain and driving spray will not trouble it. Wiring should always be left to a qualified electrician.
Where It Works Best
Give this one room. At 45.7cm tall, 25.4cm wide and reaching 21.6cm off the wall, it wants a wide elevation, a double garage frontage or a generous porch where a smaller lantern would look lost. The Byron family also runs to a medium at 36.8cm and a small at 30.5cm, both the same single lamp shape scaled down, so a run of properties or a front and side gate can use different sizes from the same design without it looking mismatched. At 6.6kg this large version is the heaviest of the three, so make sure whatever it is fixed to can carry that weight.
Quoizel, Born In A Manhattan Workshop
Quoizel started out in 1930 as a small lamp company in Manhattan, and its founder Michael Chaikin began not with electric fittings but with hurricane lamps that burned oil. That early grounding in a single contained flame and a way of directing its light is not so far from what Byron is doing nearly a century later with one bulb and a reflector disc rather than a wide flood of brightness.

Questions People Ask
How much bigger is the large than the medium Byron? Just under 9cm taller and 5cm wider, 45.7cm against 36.8cm, so measure your wall space before deciding between them.
What bulb does it take? A single E27 screw fit lamp, bought separately. Because the glass is fully clear and the lamp is on show, a filament style LED tends to suit the look best.
How is it fixed to the wall? Through the flat backplate at the top, onto a fixing that can carry 6.6kg. Brick or a timber stud is ideal.
Can it be dimmed? Yes, provided the bulb you fit is dimmable and paired with a compatible dimmer switch.
