A Wide Black Ring Of Candles, Nothing Else Around Them
Five arched ribs sweep down from a small cap to a broad flat ring, five candle lamps stand upright on the ring itself, and twisted metal leaves curl underneath into a ball finial. There is no shade to catch the eye first, just the ironwork and the lamps sitting proud on top of it.
Grey Ash, Not Grey At All
The name suggests a soft grey, but in the photographs this finish reads as a deep near black with a fine gritty texture worked into every rib and leaf. Light picks out the speckle along the curve of each arm rather than bouncing off a flat shine, so the metal looks forged rather than painted. The same frame is also made in Antique White, a chalky pale finish that recedes against a light ceiling. Grey Ash does the opposite. It stands out against plaster and holds its shape from across the room.
How It Works
The chandelier hangs from a flat round ceiling plate on oval link chain, joined to the frame by a ring at the top cap where the five ribs gather. Removing links brings the drop down to 68.8cm, and the chain lets it run out to 316.6cm for a stairwell or a tall room. Five E14 lamps light it and none are included. Whether it dims comes down to the lamps themselves, since the fitting has no dimming circuitry of its own, only dimmable lamps will answer a dimmer switch. It is Class I, which means an earth connection is required at the ceiling point, and as a hardwired fitting it should be put in by a qualified electrician. Steel construction, 6.6kg.
Where It Works Best
At 63.6cm across and 60.8cm tall this wants a table underneath it or a good run of headroom, so think dining table, stairwell, or a large bedroom where the chain can be let right out. The four light pendant in the same range is a smaller, tighter piece at 40.5cm wide, and it encloses its lamps inside a bell shaped cage rather than standing them on an open ring, so its light stays low and close to the lamps. This chandelier throws light both up onto the ceiling and out sideways across the ring, which suits a room where you want the whole ceiling lifted rather than one pool of light in the centre.
Quoizel, The Company Behind It
Quoizel operated out of New York for the best part of seven decades after Michael Chaikin founded it in 1930 as a small lamp company. In 1996 the whole operation, head office, manufacturing and distribution, moved to a 305,000 square foot facility near Charleston, South Carolina, where it still stands today. That move put an American design studio in the low country rather than a big city, and the company has stayed there and stayed privately held ever since.

Questions People Ask
How is this different from the Antique White version? Same frame and the same 63.6cm by 60.8cm size, but a different mood. Antique White is pale and chalky and softens into a light ceiling, while this Grey Ash is a dark, gritty near black that stands out against plaster.
What lamps does it take and are they included? Five E14 lamps, not included. Every one sits in full view on the open ring, so a clear candle style lamp with a visible filament suits the design better than a plain opal one.
Is it suitable for a bathroom? No IP rating is quoted for this chandelier, so it should stay in a dry room, away from bathrooms or anywhere it might catch steam or splashes.
