A Cage Of Curved Iron With Four Candles In It
Nothing hides here. Four ribs bend out from a small cap at the top, flare wide at the rim, then tuck under into a bowl of twisted metal leaves. Four candle lamps stand upright inside them. The shape does the work and the lamps you choose finish it.
Grey Ash Or Antique White
Grey Ash is the name, but the photographs tell the truth. It is a deep charcoal, dark enough to read as black across a room, and the paint carries a fine sandy speckle over every surface. That speckle is the point of it. Light catches along the top of each curved rib rather than throwing a hard shine, so the metal looks cast rather than sprayed. The other option on this frame is Antique White, chalky and soft, which settles quietly into a pale ceiling. Grey Ash does the opposite and draws itself in outline. Pick it when you want the fitting seen.
How It Works
A flat round ceiling plate, a length of oval link chain, then a heavy ring where the chain meets the top of the frame. Take links out or leave them in and the drop lands anywhere from 59.3cm to 307.5cm, which covers a normal ceiling and a stairwell equally. Four E14 lamps light it and they are not supplied. It will dim if the lamps themselves are dimmable, since there is nothing built into the fitting to argue with a dimmer. It is Class I, so an earth connection is needed at the ceiling and a qualified electrician should install it. Steel throughout, 4kg.
Where It Works Best
40.5cm across and 51.3cm tall keeps it modest, and the dark finish means it sits against pale plaster without disappearing into it. Good over a breakfast bar, above a hall console, in a small dining room, or as a pair down a galley kitchen. The five light chandelier in the same family is a different animal, 63.6cm wide and 60.8cm tall, with its candles standing on top of an open ring so light goes up as well as down. This pendant keeps its four lamps inside the cage instead, which pushes most of the light to the floor and prints the rib shadows across the ceiling. Filament style candle lamps suit it. Plain opal ones look blunt behind bare ribs.
About Quoizel
Ira Phillips joined Quoizel in 1964 as Director of Merchandising and Sales, and bought the company outright in 1986. It has stayed private ever since. Founded by the Chaikin family, run by the Phillips family, and that continuity shows in the catalogue, where a range tends to stay put for years instead of being cleared out every season.

Questions People Ask
How short can the drop be set? 59.3cm from the ceiling with the chain at its shortest, measured to the bottom of the frame. That is workable on a standard ceiling, and the chain lets it go out to 307.5cm if you are dropping it into a stairwell.
Is Grey Ash a light grey? No. It reads as a very dark charcoal, close to black, with a gritty texture in the paint. If you want a genuinely pale fitting, the Antique White version of this same frame is the one to look at.
What lamps does it take, and are they included? Four E14 lamps, and they are not included. Every one of them is on show inside the open cage, so clear candle lamps are worth choosing over plain opal.
