Ironwork Cage, No Shade in Sight

Two candle lamps sit inside a narrow bell shaped cage, held by four curved arms that meet at a ball finial above and a twisted strap below. There is no glass to soften it, so the ironwork carries the entire look, finished here in a dark, textured Grey Ash.

What Grey Ash Actually Looks Like

Forget a soft grey. In the photographs this is close to black, with a fine speckle of pale flecks worked through the paint that catches the light along every curved arm and the rim of the backplate. It has the look of old cast iron rather than a modern powder coat. The same fitting comes in Antique White, a warm off white rubbed back to brown at the edges, if you want the opposite effect of the piece receding rather than standing out.

How It Works

The oval backplate fixes to the wall and carries a short crossbar holding two E14 lampholders side by side, each with its own drip pan style bobeche beneath it. With no shade to hide behind, the lamp itself becomes part of the fitting, so it is worth choosing one that suits an open design. Bulbs are not included. Dimming is possible only when dimmable lamps are used. It is a Class I fitting, meaning an earth connection is required, and as a hardwired piece it needs fitting by a qualified electrician rather than being wired in as a DIY job.

Where It Works Best

It stands 41.8cm tall and comes 16.5cm off the wall, so give it a spot with a bit of depth, a kitchen wall away from a work surface, either side of a dining room dresser or sideboard. The same twisted strap and leaf detailing appears on a flush ceiling fitting in this family, 33cm across and only 13.9cm deep, which is the option where a wall light will not work in the room plan. Scale up further and Bradbury runs to a four light pendant at 40.5cm and a five light chandelier at 63.6cm, both hung from the ceiling on a drop rather than fixed flat like this one. Pick the dark Grey Ash version where the room already carries some contrast, exposed brick, dark woodwork, or a deep paint colour on the walls.

From Oil Lamps to Wired Fittings

Quoizel began in Manhattan in 1930 as a small maker of hurricane lamps, the kind that burned oil rather than electricity. As homes were wired for power the company followed, moving from portable oil lamps into hardwired chandeliers, pendants, sconces and ceiling fittings much like this one. A wall light with an exposed lamp and no shade is, in a way, a distant descendant of that original oil flame sitting in plain view.
