The Bedford That Hangs Instead Of Sits
Most of the Bedford range is built to fix flat to a wall or a pier. This one hangs from a chain instead, which makes it the option for a porch ceiling rather than a door surround.
Mystic Black On A Suspended Lantern
The same textured black finish as the rest of the range, carried down onto the chain itself so the whole thing reads as one piece rather than a lantern bolted onto separate ironmongery. The cast panels have that slightly pebbled surface that catches light unevenly, and the seeded glass, streaked and full of small trapped bubbles, softens the single lamp inside into a gentle pool of light rather than a glare.
How It Works
A single E27 screw fit lamp sits in the centre of the lantern and is not supplied. Fit a dimmable lamp and it will dim, since the fitting has nothing built in to prevent it. It is Class I, so an earth connection is required, and the IP44 rating protects it against splashing water from any direction, which suits a porch ceiling that is not fully enclosed. The chain is adjustable between a minimum drop of 47.9cm and a maximum of 245.1cm, so it can sit close to a low porch roof or hang well down under a taller one. Expect some simple assembly, and have the drop set and the fitting wired in by a qualified electrician.
Where It Works Best
Covered porches, deep entrance canopies, anywhere with a ceiling to hang it from rather than a wall to fix it to. That is the real difference between this and the rest of the Bedford outdoor family, which is built to fix flat rather than swing on a chain. The lantern head itself is close in scale to the small Bedford wall lantern, at 31.4cm tall and 17.8cm wide, but the chain is what makes the fitting work in a space the wall versions cannot.
Best Known For Its Glasswork
Quoizel built a large part of its reputation on Tiffany style stained glass, a specialism that started with table lamps and grew to cover chandeliers, pendants and wall fittings across the range. This lantern's glass is a plainer, clear seeded style rather than stained, but it comes from the same company whose name is still tied to that glasswork.

Questions People Ask
How much can the drop be adjusted? Between 47.9cm and 245.1cm, by removing or adding chain links during installation.
Does it need a covered porch? It is IP44 rated for splashing water from any direction, but as a suspended fitting it is best under some form of roof rather than fully in the open.
What lamp does it take? A single E27 screw fit lamp, not included. A clear lamp suits the seeded glass best.
