The Bedford Wall Lantern Sized For Most Front Doors
This is the middle size in the Bedford wall range, and for a standard height front door it is usually the one that looks right, neither swamping a modest porch nor disappearing against a wide elevation.
Texture First, Then Black
Mystic Black is not a flat paint finish. Up close the cast surface has a fine pebbled grain that catches light unevenly, which stops a lantern this size looking like a silhouette after dark. The scroll arm curves up from an angled back plate to sit above the lantern roof, and the seeded glass panels, each split by a central bar, are full of trapped bubbles that turn the lamp behind them into a soft, uneven glow rather than a hard point of light.
How It Works
One E27 screw fit lamp fits upright in the centre, and it is not supplied. Fit a dimmable lamp and the lantern will dim, since nothing in the fitting itself limits it. It is Class I, so an earth connection is needed, and the IP44 rating protects it against splashing water from any direction, whatever the weather is doing. The glass panels are properly seeded rather than smooth. Expect a little simple assembly on arrival, and have it wired in by a qualified electrician.
Where It Works Best
A regular front door, a garage, either side of a porch. At 39.1cm tall and projecting 24.1cm from the wall it sits between the large Bedford wall lantern, which is 46.1cm tall and stands out 27.9cm, and the small one, which is 32.2cm tall and projects 20.3cm. If your door is wide or the elevation is tall, size up. If the porch is tight, size down.
From A New York Workshop To The Carolina Coast
Quoizel spent its first decades in Manhattan, where it started in 1930, before moving its headquarters, manufacturing and distribution to a 305,000 square foot facility near Charleston, South Carolina, in 1996. That move put the design studio in the low country, and it is still there today, a long way from the small oil lamp maker it began as.

Questions People Ask
How much smaller is this than the large Bedford wall lantern? About seven centimetres shorter, 39.1cm against 46.1cm, and it stands 3.8cm closer to the wall at 24.1cm projection rather than 27.9cm.
What lamp does it take? A single E27 screw fit lamp, not included. A clear lamp works better than an opal one with this seeded glass.
Does it dim? Only if you fit a dimmable lamp. The fitting itself has nothing built in that would stop it.
