A Pier Lantern Built To Take The Weather

Not every Bedford fitting is meant for a wall. This one sits on its own round pedestal base and bolts flat to the top of a gate pier or a low garden wall, standing 47cm tall with nothing to lean against but its own footing.

Mystic Black Up Close

Look past the name and Mystic Black is a textured, almost gravelly black rather than a smooth painted one. It picks up daylight unevenly across the cast panels, which is exactly why it reads as solid rather than flat on a stone or brick pier. Quoizel calls the coating system on its outdoor range Coastal Armour, its own name for a finish specified to cope with both heat and cold. The clear glass has the seeded look, fine trapped bubbles and streaks, so the E27 lamp behind it glows rather than glares.

How It Works

A single E27 screw fit lamp stands upright inside, and it is not supplied. Choose a dimmable lamp and the fitting will dim with it, since there is no built in driver getting in the way. It is Class I, so it needs an earth connection at installation, and the IP44 rating protects it against splashing water from any direction, which matters on an open pier with nothing overhead. Some simple assembly should be expected, and a qualified electrician should wire it in.

Where It Works Best

Gateposts, pier caps either side of a driveway, low brick walls at the front of a plot. The round base has two fixing holes so it bolts flat rather than needing a wall arm, which is the detail that separates it from the rest of the Bedford outdoor family. The wall mounted Bedford lanterns come in three sizes for use against brick or render, and there is also a chain hung version built to drop from a porch ceiling. This is the one for a pier top, and at 21.6cm wide it needs a reasonably flat surface to sit on.

The Phillips Family Still Runs The Show

Quoizel has been a family business for most of its life. Ira Phillips joined the company in 1964 as Director of Merchandising and Sales, and by 1986 he had bought it outright. It has stayed privately held and family run ever since, first under Michael Chaikin, who founded the company in Manhattan in 1930, and then under the Phillips family, which is a longer run of continuity than most lighting brands can claim.

How does this actually fix to a pier? Through a round base plate with two fixing holes, bolted flat to the pier cap. The cable needs to run up through or alongside the pier before the lantern goes on.

Which lamp should I use? A single E27 screw fit lamp, not included. Go for a clear one rather than an opal, since the seeded glass is designed to show the filament through the bubbles.
