The Full Size Bedford, For A Wall That Can Take It
A big cast lantern with an arm that curves up and over the top of it rather than poking out of the middle. At 46.1cm tall this is the tallest wall version in the Bedford set, and on a large front elevation it looks it.
Mystic Black, And What That Actually Means
One finish only here, and it is worth knowing that Mystic Black is a textured black rather than a smooth one. In the close ups there is a fine pebbled grain across every cast surface, the kind that catches raking light and stops a lantern this size reading as a flat silhouette. No gloss, no bronze warmth underneath. Against pale render or light stone it draws a hard outline. On dark brick it goes quiet and you notice the lit glass instead. Quoizel calls the coating system on its outdoor fittings Coastal Armour, its own name for a finish it specifies to cope with heat and cold.
How It Works
One E27 screw fit lamp sits upright in a holder in the middle of the lantern. The lamp is not supplied. Fit dimmable lamps and it dims, because there is nothing in the fitting itself standing in the way. It is Class I, so the installation needs an earth connection. The IP44 rating covers splashing water from any direction, which is what you want on an exposed wall or an open porch. The glass is properly seeded, full of trapped bubbles and fine vertical streaks, so a clear filament lamp reads as a warm point of light rather than a hard glare. Expect some simple assembly, and have it wired in by a qualified electrician.
Where It Works Best
Wide front doors, double garages, or a matched pair flanking a gated entrance. This is the Bedford that still reads from the road on a two storey elevation, where the smaller ones vanish. Measure your porch reveal before you commit, because it stands 27.9cm off the wall. The same lantern comes as a medium wall light at 39.1cm and a small at 32.2cm, and the design also exists as a pedestal lantern for a pier top and a chain hung version for a porch ceiling. Only this one gives you the full 25.4cm width.
Made By Quoizel
Quoizel started in Manhattan in 1930 and its first trade was hurricane lamps that burned oil. Electric light was not the business at all. As American houses were wired the company followed the wiring, moving from portable oil lamps to hardwired chandeliers, pendants and sconces. You can still read the older logic in a lantern like this one: a roof to shed rain, a chimney form above it, glass panels so the flame shows.

Questions People Ask
How much bigger is this than the medium Bedford wall lantern? Seven centimetres taller, 46.1cm against 39.1cm, and nearly four centimetres wider at 25.4cm against 21.6cm. It also stands further out, 27.9cm rather than 24.1cm.
Which lamp should I order? A single E27 screw fit lamp, not included. A clear one suits the seeded glass better than an opal, since the whole point is seeing the filament through the bubbles.
Does it fix flat to the wall? Yes. The shaped octagonal back plate takes the fixings and the arm curves out from the top of it, so the lantern hangs clear of the wall face.
