The Asheville table lamp swaps a solid column for an open frame of curved bronze bars, almost basket like, holding up the same fan patterned glass shade used across the range. It is as much a piece of metalwork as it is a lamp.

One finish here too, Valiant Bronze, seen across the curved uprights of the base and the square foot beneath them. It has a dry, worked look rather than a polish, with the bronze reading almost charcoal in shadow and warming up wherever the light catches an edge. The shade shares its glass pattern with the rest of the Asheville range, deep maroon lines fanning out from a central point over marbled honey and cream glass, cream toward the outer corners and a richer amber where the panels meet in the middle. Lit from below by the two lamps inside, the red lines glow like ember trails and the amber deepens noticeably compared with how it reads by daylight.

How It Works

Two E27 screw fit lamps sit inside the shade on separate pull chains, so you can run one for a low background glow or both for proper reading light. Bulbs are not supplied. Dimming works only if you fit dimmable lamps yourself. It plugs straight into a socket, so there is no hardwired installation to arrange. It is a Class I lamp, earthed through its mains lead. At 5kg it has real weight to it, mostly in that bronze frame, so lift it with both hands when you unpack it.

Where It Works Best

At 63.5cm tall with a 40.6cm shade, this is the largest way to bring the Asheville glass pattern into a room, and unlike its flush and semi flush siblings it needs a surface rather than a ceiling. A wide bedside chest, a console table or the corner of a living room table all give it room to spread its shade properly. In the photographs it sits comfortably beside a bed and equally well on a glass topped table in a living room, which gives a sense of how differently the warm glass reads against light and dark surroundings.

The Phillips family has run Quoizel since Ira Phillips joined the company in 1964 and bought it outright in 1986, taking over from founder Michael Chaikin's original Manhattan lamp business. It remains privately held today, which is part of why a shade this involved to make, built up from dozens of individual pieces of glass, is still in production rather than having been simplified out of the range.
