Butterscotch Glass On A Bronze Column
The Arden is the kind of lamp that changes a room the moment it is on. A steep tapered shade in honey coloured glass, a bronze stem with real weight to it, and two pull chains so you can have half the light or all of it. Straight out of the Mission playbook.
Bronze Patina, And The Glass In Daylight
One finish here, Bronze Patina, and the close shots tell you more than the name does. It is a dark reddish brown, matt rather than shiny, with the paler high points along the ridges of the column and the six sided foot where the finish thins over an edge. Against the glass it looks almost chocolate. The shade itself is butterscotch and cream marbled panels divided by dark bars, with a rippled red amber strip running down each corner, a row of stepped brown and cream diamonds near the bottom, and a final band of olive green rectangles along the very edge. Unlit, those greens and reds are muted and the whole thing reads brown. Lit, the panels go properly golden and the red strips glow like embers.
How It Works
Two E27 screw fit lamps, each on its own pull chain, so one gives you a low glow for the corner of a room and both together give you enough to read by. Bulbs are not supplied. Dimming works only if the lamps you fit are dimmable ones. There is no hardwired installation to arrange, it plugs into a socket and the switching is all on the chains. It is a Class I lamp, so it earths through its mains lead. At 5kg it is heavy for its size, which is what you want from a lamp with a glass shade at head height, but it also means two hands when you move it and care when you lift it out of the packaging.
Where It Works Best
At 59.7cm tall with a 40.6cm shade this is a full size lamp rather than a small task light, so it needs a surface with some depth. A sideboard, a wide desk, a chest of drawers, a hall table. Put it on a narrow bedside table and the shade will overhang. The light it gives is downward and warm from the shade edge plus a diffuse glow through the panels, so it lights a pool of desk or floor rather than the whole room. Set against the ceiling fittings in Quoizel's Tiffany range, which wash light upward, this one does the opposite and works best in company with them. Two of these at either end of a long sideboard is a proper look.
Quoizel, The Company Behind It
Quoizel has only had two owning families since 1930. The second arrived when Ira Phillips joined in 1964 as Director of Merchandising and Sales, worked his way through the business, and bought it outright in 1986. The Phillips family still run it, still privately, which is unusual for an American lighting name of that age and explains why the Tiffany style work has never been quietly discontinued in favour of something cheaper to make.

Questions People Ask
Will it fit on a bedside table? Only a generous one. The shade is 40.6cm across, so on a small table it will hang over both edges. A chest of drawers or a sideboard suits it better.
Do the two chains do different things? Yes. One chain per lamp, so you can run it at half output or full.
What lamps does it need? Two E27 screw fit, not supplied. Fit dimmable ones if you want to be able to dim it.
