A Wide Bowl Of Amber Glass, Sitting Tight To The Plaster
Switch this one on and the whole shade lights up like a low sun. The Alcott sits almost flat against the ceiling, so you get a 42cm disc of leaded glass without losing any headroom. Mission geometry, warm colour, no fuss.
The Valiant Bronze Finish, And The Glass Up Close
Alcott comes in one finish, Valiant Bronze, and it reads darker in the room than the name suggests. Look at the canopy and the three rim clips in the detail shots. It is a deep coffee brown with a faint warm sheen where light catches the edges, much closer to aged iron than to anything polished. The glass is the part people actually stop and look at. Cream and honey panels fan out from an amber rosette at the low point of the bowl, a band of bottle green chevrons rings the shade, and small plum and caramel blocks break up the rhythm. Lit, the green cools right down and the cream turns buttery. Unlit it still has plenty going on, which matters for a fitting you see from above on the stairs.
How It Works
Two E27 screw fit lamps sit above the glass and fire light up into the bowl, so what reaches the room is bounced and softened rather than aimed down at anyone. Bulbs are not supplied. It is dimmable if the lamps you fit are dimmable themselves, which is the usual arrangement with an E27 holder. Electrically it is Class I, so an earth connection is required at the ceiling rose, and it should be installed by a qualified electrician. The glass shade is held on by the three clips visible around the rim, which is also how you get at the lamps. At 3kg it is not heavy as Tiffany pieces go, but it is glass and lead, so take it out of the box with both hands.
Where It Works Best
This is the low ceiling answer in the Alcott family. A drop of 13.5cm means it clears beams, door swings and tall people, so it goes where a pendant simply cannot. The 42.1cm spread is generous enough to light a hallway, a landing or a bedroom on its own, and because the light goes upward first it lifts the ceiling instead of glaring at a pillow. In a kitchen it suits the eating end rather than the worktop. Where the pendant and semi flush shapes in the wider Tiffany range hang down and become the centrepiece, this one keeps its head down and just glows.
Made By Quoizel
Quoizel began in Manhattan in 1930, and its first business was not electric light at all. Michael Chaikin's small lamp company sold hurricane lamps that burned oil, at a point when plenty of American homes still needed them. Wired fittings followed as those houses were rewired, and the leaded glass habit came along for the ride. Ninety odd years later the company is still privately held and family run, and a shade like this one is a direct descendant of that early glass work.

Questions People Ask
How much ceiling height does it need? Very little. It projects 13.5cm, so it works under beams and in rooms where a hanging light would be in the way.
What bulbs does it take, and are they included? Two E27 screw fit lamps, and no, you supply those. LED is the sensible choice here because the lamps sit above the glass where nobody sees them.
Is it suitable for a bathroom? There is no published IP rating for this fitting, so treat it as a dry room light only.
