Fit it somewhere it will actually get rained on and within a season or two it starts to look like it has always belonged there, which is rather the point of choosing raw metal over a sealed finish.

How It Works

The fixture is solid brass throughout, with no lacquer holding back the natural ageing process, and it carries an IP64 rating so it copes well with driving rain and salt spray on an open wall. A single ES/E27 lamp holder sits behind a clear ribbed glass diffuser, which softens the light source into a gentler, more even glow rather than a hard point of brightness. The cable enters at the rear through a cable gland, keeping the wiring tucked out of sight once the fixture is mounted.

This finish rewards patience and a genuinely exposed spot, a boat house, an open jetty wall, a coastal cottage porch, anywhere the natural darkening and occasional green flecking of raw brass will feel like a feature rather than a fault. Is Raw Brass supposed to change colour outdoors? Yes, that is the whole appeal of this finish. Left unlacquered, it will darken and can develop light green patina flecks over time, which most people choose it for rather than try to avoid.

Can I stop the Raw Brass finish from ageing if I prefer the bright look? You can slow it with regular waxing and cleaning, though it will still shift gradually. If you would rather it stayed consistent, Satin Nickel or Mirror Nickel are better suited to that.
