A Cool Glint of Ship's Metal
There's something about satin nickel that suits a modern coastal house the way brass suits an old harbour cottage. This finish takes the same solid brass body as the rest of the Navigator Merchant Flush Bulkhead and plates it in a cool, brushed metal tone that reads more architectural than nautical nostalgia, without losing any of the maritime character built into the shape. It sits close and flat against the wall, catching the light like a ship's fitting polished for duty rather than display, and it will not warm or darken the way an untreated brass finish does over time. If your house leans toward render, glass and composite doors rather than weatherboard and sash windows, this is the Merchant Flush in the finish that matches it.
How It Works
Underneath the plating this is the same purpose built fixture as every Merchant Flush Bulkhead in the range. The body is solid brass, chosen for its resistance to the salt air and damp that quickly finish off cheaper metals. It takes a single ES / E27 lamp, which is not supplied, so you can choose the bulb type and warmth that suits your space. Cable entry is at the rear, feeding into a polyamide back plate that keeps the wiring protected and the fixing flush and tidy against masonry or timber. A clear ribbed glass diffuser sits over the lamp, spreading the light evenly rather than throwing a single hard glare, and the whole unit is rated IP64, so it copes with driving rain and wind blown spray as well as everyday outdoor damp.
Where It Works Best
Satin nickel earns its keep on newer or renovated coastal properties, seafront apartments, garden studios and anywhere the rest of the ironmongery, from door handles to house numbers, has already gone cool and contemporary rather than warm and aged. Because the Merchant Flush sits so close to the wall, at only 80mm deep, it is a good choice for narrow porches, tight side passages and gateways where the deeper, glass fronted Merchant Bulkhead in the wider Navigator range would stick out too far. Choose this over the Antique Brass or Raw Brass versions of the same fixture when you want the maritime shape without any hint of aged patina.

Questions People Ask
Does satin nickel tarnish or discolour outdoors?
No. Unlike raw or antique brass, the satin nickel plating on this fixture is chosen specifically so the surface tone stays consistent, whatever the weather throws at it, rather than developing a patina.
Is the Satin Nickel Merchant Flush Bulkhead suitable for a house right on the coast?
Yes. The solid brass body underneath the plating is built to resist salt air and damp, and the fixture carries an IP64 rating, so it is designed with exposed coastal walls in mind.
What size wall light is this and does it stick out far from the wall?
It measures 200mm in length, 135mm in width and only 80mm in depth, which is why it is described as a flush fitting, sitting noticeably closer to the wall than a typical projecting bulkhead light.
