Let the Salt Air Write Its Own Story
Raw Brass is the finish for anyone happy to let the weather do some of the design work. This version of the Navigator Merchant Flush Bulkhead leaves the solid brass body unlacquered, so from the moment it goes up outside it begins to change, moving from a warm pale gold toward a richer, darker tone as it meets salt air, rain and sun. No two fittings will age quite the same way, which is exactly the point for a light styled on genuine maritime hardware. It sits flush against the wall rather than projecting outward, so as the brass darkens it starts to look like something salvaged from a working harbour rather than a new addition.
How It Works
The build is shared across the whole Merchant Flush Bulkhead range. The body is solid brass, a material long favoured in marine fittings because it resists corrosion far better than plated alternatives once it is exposed to damp coastal conditions. It takes a single ES / E27 lamp, not included, leaving you free to pick the bulb and light colour you want. The rear cable entry feeds into a polyamide back plate, keeping the wiring sheltered and the fitting sitting close and flush against the wall. Light spreads out through a clear ribbed glass diffuser rather than a bare lamp, and the whole fixture is rated IP64, so it is built to handle wind, rain and general outdoor exposure without letting moisture in.
Where It Works Best
Raw Brass suits coastal cottages, boat houses, garden walls and anywhere you want a fitting that will genuinely earn its patina rather than arrive looking pre aged. Its shallow 80mm depth also makes it a practical choice for narrow porches and tight passageways where the deeper, glass fronted Merchant Bulkhead from elsewhere in the Navigator range would not sit comfortably. Choose this over Antique Brass if you want to watch the fixture develop its own character outdoors, or over Satin Nickel if brass warmth, rather than a cool contemporary tone, is what your exterior calls for.

Questions People Ask
Will Raw Brass tarnish or change colour once it is fitted outside?
Yes, and this is by design. Left unlacquered, the brass will darken gradually as it reacts with salt air and moisture, developing an aged patina rather than staying bright.
Can I slow down or reverse the patina on a raw brass bulkhead light?
The surface can be cleaned and polished back toward its original tone with a suitable brass cleaner, though most people fitting Raw Brass are happy to let the natural weathering continue.
Is an unlacquered brass fitting tough enough for a house right on the seafront?
Yes. Solid brass is chosen specifically for coastal fittings because it resists corrosion far better than many other metals, and this fixture carries an IP64 rating for outdoor use.
