Brass That Earns Its Character Outdoors
Raw brass starts life bright, almost golden, and then does something a lot of finishes cannot fake, it changes on its own. Rain, salt air and sun will gradually darken and streak the surface of this recessed ground light, so no two installations ever end up looking quite the same. If you prefer materials that age honestly rather than arriving already distressed, this is the finish to choose, and because it sits flush in the lawn or border, that evolving brass surface is the only part of the fitting anyone ever sees.
How It Works
Bertha is a solid brass recessed ground light rated IP67, built to sit flush into lawns, borders, paths and decking without letting water in. A single GU10 lamp (not supplied) sits behind a toughened glass lens, directing light upward to graze walls, trees or architectural features rather than spilling sideways into eyes at ground level. The brass body and surround are substantial enough to be walked over occasionally without cracking, which matters for anything set into a path or driveway edge.
Where It Works Best
Because it disappears into the ground during daylight hours, Bertha works well anywhere you want light without a visible fitting, along a run of steps, at the base of a boundary wall, or spaced out to uplight a row of trees. Raw Brass suits anyone happy to let the fitting weather in naturally over the seasons, in contrast to the Antique Brass version of this same light (SKU 09201), which arrives already finished to look aged. Coastal and exposed gardens in particular tend to speed up that natural darkening, so this finish rewards a little patience with a genuinely lived in look within a year or two.

Questions People Ask
Does raw brass need polishing once it is fitted outdoors?
No. Raw brass is meant to be left alone outdoors, it will darken and build a natural patina over time, and polishing it would only remove that character rather than protect the fitting.
Is the Navigator Bertha recessed ground light in Raw Brass suitable for a driveway or path?
Yes. It is IP67 rated and built from solid brass strong enough to take occasional foot traffic when properly recessed, making it a good fit for paths, steps and driveway edges.
How long does it take for Raw Brass to darken outdoors?
It varies with local weather and how exposed the site is, but coastal air and regular rainfall will typically bring on visible darkening and streaking within months, deepening further over the following year or two.
