The Finish That Changes With the Weather
Raw brass is the finish for anyone who likes a fitting that keeps evolving. The Navigator Hull Pendant Lantern arrives bright and golden, then slowly deepens and darkens as it meets the air, the rain and the odd salty coastal breeze, building a patina that is entirely its own over months and years. Nothing about that process needs managing unless you want to polish it back to a brighter shine now and then. Hung above a front door or a covered porch, it brings a genuinely handmade, lived in warmth that a factory finish simply cannot fake.
How It Works
Behind that living finish is a solidly built lantern. The body is cast in solid brass and fitted with a prismatic glass diffuser that softens the light rather than sending out a single bright point, so the glow spreads gently across a doorway or path. It is rated IP54, meaning it is built for covered outdoor spots such as porches, canopies or covered walkways where it will meet wind and moisture but not a direct, driving downpour. It runs on a single E27 (Edison screw) lamp up to 18W and works well with LED lamps of the same fitting. A brass chain carries it down from a ceiling rose plate, ready for a qualified electrician to wire in.
Where It Works Best
Raw brass suits homes where a bit of natural change is part of the appeal, coastal cottages, converted barns, reclaimed brick facades and anywhere a slightly weathered, working harbour feel is welcome. Compared with its antique brass sibling, which is finished to look aged from the moment it is fitted, raw brass takes its own time to get there, so no two fittings will darken in quite the same way. Against the satin nickel option in the same range, it brings warmth rather than a cool, brushed metal look. For a caged, more rugged silhouette rather than this plain exposed glass design, the range also offers the Hull Guard Pendant Lantern.

Questions People Ask
Does raw brass tarnish or patina when used outdoors?
Yes, that is the point of choosing it. Raw brass reacts naturally to air and moisture, gradually shifting from bright gold to a deeper, more antiqued tone over time, and that change will vary slightly depending on where it is mounted.
Can the hanging chain be shortened?
Yes, the chain can be shortened to bring the lantern down from its maximum 830mm drop to a minimum of around 400mm, which is useful for lower porch ceilings or a more compact hang.
Is this lantern tough enough for a seaside or coastal home?
Solid brass is naturally resistant to the kind of corrosion salt air can cause, and with an IP54 rating it is built for covered coastal porches and entrances, though it should still be mounted somewhere sheltered rather than fully exposed to driving weather.
